Earlier, contemplating a move, I asked for general impressions of Sweden and Denmark.
In April I am traveling to Göteborg for a visit/interview. I will have most of a Thursday and all of a Saturday free.
I’m wondering: what should I see and do in Göteborg? I can read all the guidebooks, but I’m specifically trying to decide if I should move there. I imagine that I want to try public transit, grocery shopping, and visit potential neighborhoods. What else?
Göteeborg is at its best summertime, so try to imagine what it would be like then. If you are a fan of seafood then it is a great place to live, check out Fiskekyrkan (the Fish Church) which is a large fish saleshall.
I have only been there in tourist mode myself, but it is a really nice town, the sort of size I like.
I’m not sure exactly what to recommend that you see and do in Göteborg. It’s a beautiful city in my mind at least. I lived here for 4 years or so and my family still lives here (I study in Glasgow now), so I am here quite frequently still (in fact, I’m in gbg now).
Fiskekyrkan is interesting, as Iteki suggested. (Although, it should really be spelled Feskekôrkan, which is Göteborska ) That is a good example of Göteborsk humor - it definately looks like a church from the outside, but was built for the purpose of being a fish market from the beginning as far as I understand it.
There aren’t that many touristy type things to do. I suppose that there is what is known as läppstiftet (a tall strangely colored building in the harbor) where you can go to the top of it for a good aerial view of the city. Not all that exciting though IMHO. The café up there isn’t even any good. That’s another thing that I like about the city. There are lots of different cafés everywhere (and not even a single Starbucks. A definate positive thing about the city if you ask me…).
Otherwise, I’d suggest that you just wander about the city. Our main street is called Kungsportsavenyn (or Avenyn for short, as its known). I would also suggest maybe exploring the other areas of town (Vasastan, Haga, Linné) Everything is within walking distance downtown.
As for public transport, don’t worry about it. It’s very good. I don’t know what kind of areas you’re looking into as potential neighborhood - I live very close to Liseberg (the amusement park) and that’s a nice area I think. Very close to the city center, but not right in the middle of it. It’s about a 15min walk from Avenyn.
Well, I’m not sure this has helped at all. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions at all about the city. I hope that you enjoy your stay here!
