I’m an old white guy, so my taste, or its lack, shouldn’t be surprising. My roommate is fond of playing college basketball and Hip-Hop at volumes I didn’t think were possible on our equipment.
I wear headphones all of the time because I’m considerate, and I keep hoping my example will rub off, but no. And it would help if he played better music, but no. Like I said, I’m an old white guy, and I wasn’t familiar with Hip-Hop. I still wish I wasn’t, but no.
Some Hip-Hop is good. Truly. Could you ask your roommate to help you find hip-hop for old white guys? Maybe he can ease you into it.

As an “older” white guy, I might might recommend the classic hip-hop of Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious BIG, Tupac, Ice Cube, Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC, and Beastie Boys.
Rap and hip hop have been around for over 40 years, so I find it strange the OP wouldn’t be familiar with at least a little bit of hip hop.
Ask the guy to war headphones. Even if it was music you liked, it’s inconsiderate to blast it all the time.
All I need is a new roommate who doesn’t listen to it. This one could die, but he’s too healthy.
