Backyard Burger recently started selling Sweet Potato Fries. Tried them and fell in love. My goodness they are good. But, also expensive. A buck more than regular fries.
Why in the heck haven’t burger places been selling Sweet Potato Fries all along? They are so much tastier than spuds.
I think Sonic has Sweet Potato Tots. I haven’t tried them yet.
You tried Sweet Potato Fries/tots yet? Which Burger chain has them?
I had them at Smashburger and was not especially impressed. I think I decided that the rosemary they had put on them worked better on regular fries than sweet potato. And they were mushy, but that may have been bad luck on my part.
Had them several places. I’ve decided to never eat them again, anywhere. I just don’t like sweet potatoes when I’m eating BBQ or a burger or the like. They are just…wrong. So, like curly fries and other abominations, they will be swept into the dustbin of food history, never to sully anyone’s plate ever again, if we are all lucky and Jebus loves us.
I’ve had them at several indie restaurants. Sweet potatoes seem to have more moisture and less starch or something, because they are always, always, always soggy. That’s really too bad because they taste good, but it still hasn’t been something I can get excited about.
Now, the Clancy’s sweet potato chips you buy at ALDI… I can inhale a bag of those in one go.
The problem with sweet potato fries is that when they’re good, but when they’re bad, they’re horrible. If they aren’t fried just right, they come out gloppy and tasteless.
My favorite SWFs are from a local pub chain called The Greene Turtle. They’re crisp, and taste great with raspberry jam.
I’ve only had them at a couple restaurants (not chains) and I like them. It seems like the trick is to not cut them too thick; they need to be thin enough to crisp up. Otherwise I also get them frozen from Costco, or just slice up an actual sweet potato and put it on the grill.
Not a fan of sweet potato fries myself. I do like sweet potatoes, but not in fry form. I’ve just never had one that was good. Even the crispy ones just had a weird texture on the inside I didn’t like.
Good point about Sweet Potato Fries being soggy. That seems like the standard way they always come out. Sweet Potatoes are more moist and have less starch.
At home my favorite way to reheat baked sweet potatoes is to refrigerate (that makes them firm), peel, and cut into slices about 1/4 inch thick. Brown in a skillet with butter. Done correctly, there’s a decent crispy outer shell on the slices. But once they cool even a little the soggy starts. <shrug> my grandmother’s sweet potato slices did the same thing 40 years ago when I was a kid. I loved them anyhow.
Amen! My favorite sweet potato fries come from The Counter, a (mostly California, apparently) burger chain. They’re crispy and delicious and served with an insanely addictive horseradish aioli.
Red Robin has fantastic sweet potato fries. I order them now every time we eat there and have them with the spicy ketchup.
I tried Sonic’s sweet potato tots and they were just…horrible. Blech. I was hoping to love them, but they didn’t have much flavor at all and were kinda gooey.
OMG, yes! I ordered these the other day in lieu of regular tots without reading the fine print, and gracious, they were a $1.50 upcharge! I won’t be buying them again. Even if they were the most delicious potato product on the face of the planet (which they’re not) they’re going to have a hard time selling them at that price. I feel pretty sure they’re a temporary item and will fail hard at producing much profit for Sonic.
They were “just alright”… and they seemed heavier and more filling than regular tots. And very sweet. Not very crunchy. I actually didn’t want to finish them, but good grief I must have paid 3 or 4 dollars for them. Nearly the price of the burger they were supposed to be a “side” for. Outrageous.
I love sweet potato fries from the frozen section at the store. I bake them until they’re the crispy I like and I can season them the way I like, too. I even found a brand (don’t remember now) that makes the tots - those I did not like at all. They crisped up fine in the oven, but they were very terribly sweet. I’ll not bother with those anywhere I find them. I’ll stick with the fries.
I’ve not had them in any chain. I did have some yummy sweet potato fries at a pub in Salem, MA once, though. We usually just buy them in the frozen potato section at the grocery store. The ones we like are Alexia.
