Austin declared a disaster so they pretty much had to cancel it.
So tired of this stupid virus paranoia. Just drive us into a recession, ok.
I wonder if the company who ran it will go bankrupt: undoubtedly they have spent a great deal of money already–and now they have to refund money they have received.
My Sister from Austin just told me this. Shocked. That is big-time in Austin every year.
Am I out of the loop? Has this virus really gone into pandemic levels? Or, are people overreacting?
My opinion: the virus is at the point where large gathering organizers really can’t win. I can very easily see a situation where they go on, but still lose a ton of money because no one shows up (maybe even more than canceling). The similar reactions overseas and the lack of testing in the U.S. are also big factors, and no one wants to be the first to shrug and get slammed with blame later (“Virus Outbreak Investigation Centers on Concert”).
Dang, SXSW was supposed to be the first American show by Japanese metal band Ningen Isu (been around for 30 years, just now finally touring outside of Japan).
Live performances on any scale; artsy gatherings; sports events from Little League through Olympics; any confabs and pilgrimages. All will be canceled or empty because who can take the risk? Ruthless regimes will continue to impose strict screenings, with temperatures taken to pass through doorways. Will US entities go that far?
I searched on “coronavirus cancellations” but can’t find a current canonical list. We know flights, cruises, commutes, shows, festivals, conferences, schools, are gone gone gone. Good thing we’re all online now, right? Except the poor bastards at fulfillment centers.
They certainly had insurance.
Probably more likely to catch a dose of The Clap in Austin than Corona. Geez, People.
And insurers have reinsurers to back them up. But my search on “coronavirus insurance” gets hits like this from Billboard: Promoters Who Need Coronavirus Insurance Likely Don’t Have It, Experts Say. “As the disease continues to stoke widespread fears, cancellations of major summer events may result in huge payouts from insurance companies.” Expect a hike in premiums. That page links to Billboard’s Here Are All the Major Concerts Canceled Due to Coronavirus (Updating)
That really pops my balloon.
From my Billboard cite above:
My emphasis. Bigger than 9/11. Meanwhile, also from Billboard: 8 Tips for Attending Concerts & Avoiding Coronavirus. “Tip #4: Wash your hands. Tip #7: Lay off the high-fiving.” And don’t inhale.
Sadly repeating the effects that machine gun biplanes had on the NXNW festival.
