I like this website. It’s informative. But come on. Ethel Rosenberg was a spy?
Yes, it’s been established well over that Julius Rosenberg was a spy. But both Ruth and David Greenglass have recanted the parts of their testimonies where they finger Ethel, saying that they were pressured by the FBI to lie on the witrness stand. Ruth even admits that the ONLY thing they had on Ethel Rosenberg, that Ruth saw her typing notes for David, was a total lie. I’m not saying Ethel didn’t know what was going on, but that’s a far cry from spy, or accomplice even. She got the chair, people. Let’s at least respect an innocent woman’s name.
Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards, J.J._Mario, we’re glad to have you with us.
When you start a thread, it’s helpful to others if you provide a link to the column in question. Saves lots of search time through the Archives, and helps keep us all on the same page. In this case, Were Ethel and Julius Rosenberg Soviet spies?
No biggie, you’ll know for next time.
Please note that Cecil is not basing his comments on the Greenglass’s testimony, but on the records released since the fall of the Iron Curtain, representing evidence from both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. And that Cecil does say that “Ethel was at most an accomplice.”

The rosenbergs were the worst of the worst, the sympathy that some want to give them is disgusting. Julius is one of the worst traitors in history. His loyalty was to Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union. He opposed entry into WWII until Russia entered, then he went all out in support of his soviet masters. Ethel was equally guilty if not in deed , in ommission and support. The got better than those who fell into the hands of the communists. More than they deserved.
