SYNC-OUT OF RANGE error message - wtf?

A friend of mine is getting this message while loading Windows. 1. I’ve never heard of this before.
2. There seems to be no such message listed on MS’s support web pages.
3. It doesn’t come up in a search at all, either.

Anybody know what this means?

It sounds like his monitor is complaining of a refresh rate set too high. At what point in the install is the error appearing? I’d try selecting a lower resolution and refresh rate.

Severian is on the right track. The message is actually coming from your monitor, not Windows. The usual solution is to boot in safe mode and install the driver for your actual monitor (which won’t let you set the refresh rate too high), or just turn down the default refresh rate (display properties, settings->advanced).

Along with Severian’s excellent advice… Jiggle the monitor chord, and make sure it’s fastened tightly.

Thanks, everyone! These are great tips.
