Syrian uprising massacre in Homs

Is this just yet another manifestation of the Arab Spring (now Winter)?
Have any of y’all seen the scenes of this.
I was just watching AC360 and the reporting from the Syrian guy on his cellphone was gut-wrenching.

Is it just hyperbole?
Is there another thread about this?

I hope I posted this in the proper subforum.

http://www.aljazeera.com/ is reporting it. :frowning:

Probably not. Nothing new under the sun, sadly.

The pictures looked horrific.
I know they aren’t an ally of the USA but these are living, breathing human beings.

Dang if I know what we should do.
Probably nothing.
The general sentiment is ‘let them kill each other because it will keep them occupied so we don’t have to do it for them’.
That is a morally reprehensible position, but I have heard it spoken more than once (not here, but IRL).

The media here has been covering it extensively, and I’ve been keeping close track. It’s pretty horrible.

The problem is, unlike Libya, Syria has an actual modern military, and more importantly, is closely supported by Iran and Hizballah (with Russia providing more discrete backing). Any overt military action would almost certainly spark a wholesale military conflict, which would not be good for anyone.

I’d be very surprised, though, if Israel and the U.S. weren’t watching events there very carefully, if only to keep track of Syrian weapon systems, conventional or other. Whether they’re actively providing the rebels with intelligence or weapons is anyone’s guess; it’s certainly not something the rebels themselves would willingly disclose.

The West hated Ghadaffi for a long time and wanted him out. Ghadaffi was a regional troublemaker in Africa and Europe. Assad has kept his “trouble making” in his own area. Plus the Arab League did not want the bombing of Libya and NATO supporting the rebels. They wanted to stop the overflights.

You won’t see anyone agreeing to something similar in Syria. Syria is the only serious enemy Israel has at the moment. Iran is too far and the Hamas type movements are can irritate a lot but can’t knock Israel out.

Israel is way too happy to sit back and watch Syria exhaust itself

This is really nothing-Assad’s father killed over 10,000 in Homs.
Where are the muslim clerics denouncing this? More silence?
Funny how cartoons about Muhammed are so damn important…while mass slaughter means little.

Truth be told I’m surprised that the government waited as long as it did to really ramp up the massacring.

How do you know they aren’t? What makes you think the Western media would bother reporting about a Muslim cleric who said such a thing?

Well, yes and no. While we’d be happy to see Assad go, chaos on your border is never a good thing. It tends to have, well, chaotic consequences.
