System Shock reboot on Kickstarter

With a very short playable demo available. Looks like it’s over 1/3 of the way funded as of this morning, about double what it was last night. Hopefully that means we can anticipate full funding by July 28…and then a delivery date of Dec. '17.

I’m in. My introduction to SS was the second installment, but man what a game. Unparalleled atmosphere to that point in my gaming experience, matched only perhaps by parts of HL2. Great blend of play elements, really made you think about how to approach scenarios. Do I really want to use a shotgun shell? If so, should I spend a slug? Etc.

In fact I just dropped Fallout 4 like a hot rock to play SS2 again.

Well I won’t bump my own post again, but I’ll say I’m surprised there wasn’t more interest around here!

Over 2/3 funded.

Did i see Shia Labeuf in that video?

I’m backing it.

Backing it too. I like the look of the game, and it sounds like they;re giving mechanics a pass too, looks promising.

I was one of the designers of the original System Shock (and Shock 2) with Looking Glass Studios, more years ago now than I wish to recall. As such, I’m of two minds about this project.

On one hand, it’s looks amazing.

On the other hand, it looks FREAKIN’ AWESOME. Seriously. They recently released a video showing 8 minutes of straight gameplay footage, and it’s a beautiful hi-res shot straight to my nostalgia gland. You can watch the video on Rock Paper Shotgun.

Even though I have nothing to do with this remake, I am admittedly biased in its favor, as you might imagine. I’ve bruised my knuckles trying to shove Kickstarter dollars directly through my monitor.

It looks like there’s a demo on Steam! Downloading now…

Played a bit of the demo. Good atmosphere, but buggy. Unkillable enemies, CTD when I meet some of them.

I found the original game unplayable; very dated controls that made navigation a chore. I guess it postdated DOOM by 1 year but I remember the clunky controls and I feel SS1 was worse. I see that there was a “remake” awhile back which improved on some of that, didn’t try it though. The sequel was very nice though. The Bioshock games were good spiritual sequels, although still shooters with some very minimal RPG elements, whereas SS2 was an RPG with some shooter elements which I liked. I will try this at some point once everything is ironed out.

I [del]see[/del]hear they kept Terri Brosius as the voice of SHODAN. But they didn’t keep Eric Brosius’ techno music, so it doesn’t feel like System Shock.

That’s so cool. Looking glass was one of my all time favourite studios. So many great games. Did you have anything to do with Terra Nova?

You’re one of the 17 people who bought and played Terra Nova?! In fact I was the game’s lead designer, though I was still fairly junior at the time and so allowed the senior programming people to make most of the big decisions.

I spent about 10 years at LG – did design work on Ultima Underworld 2, System Shock, Terra Nova, System Shock 2, Thief, and a little bit on Thief 2. It was a fun decade, though I didn’t sleep very much.

Did anyone who played the demo work out how to use the grenades?

Not at my computer but there are control options. Try G key.

I’ll get in on the kickstarter when the next fiscal month rolls around. I first played System Shock 2, and it kept my nerves on edge for hours. My mouse hand would jump everytime I heard movement and I ended up running around blind, firing into the ceiling.

I bought the refurbished edition of System Shock I, because I like to support efforts to update old games for modern systems. But I still found it difficult to play. My mind can no longer resolve those big blurry pixels into a comprehensible world. The demo looks a lot better. I’ll be happy to pay to finally be able to play through the first chapter of the saga. And maybe if it’s a success, System Shock 2 will get an update down the road.

Already tried that, doesn’t do anything for me. I was wondering if they had actually enabled them yet.

I never did find the part in the demo that was supposed to enable me to fix that circuit and go through that door.

Click on the individual buttons. Bit of a headslapper, that one, took me awhile too.

No, I got through the keypad. I’m talking about the one where it says that the circuit is broken.

Still have the box and contents in storage somewhere. It truly was a great game and it’s a real shame it wasn’t more successful. Ahead of it’s time, like all Looking Glass games. The mission variety was excellent. The highlight being the infiltration of the pirate base using a stolen pirate suit.

I bet the FMV cost a pretty penny. It was pretty cheesy but I didn’t mind at the time, being a teenager already inoculated through years of bad late night scifi. The twist of one of your team members being a traitor totally got me. Didn’t see it coming.

The box did promise a multiplayer patch was to come but it never materialised. I guess the low sales nixed that idea. Still, me and a couple of my friends, who bought the game on my recommendation (you’re welcome), would have loved it.
