Tahitian "Hula" and the Ikettes - Parallels?

I’m watching a show about Polynesia on the Travel Channel. They showed some Tahitian dancing and I had a flashback from when I was a kid living in Hawaii. We went to all the tourist attractions, The Polynesian Cultural Center, the Kodak Hula Show, etc. I remembered that it was always the Tahitian dancing, with all the hip shaking, that I enjoyed watching the most. Mind you that I was a boy between the ages of 8 and 10 years old back then.

Fast forward a a few years to when Ike and Tina Turner were performing their hit, “Proud Mary,” on TV. I just realized that the way Tina and the Ikettes moved their hips were similar to the Tahitian moves. Needless to say, I’ve always liked watching the Ikettes too. In fact, I was annoyed watching Tina’s “farewell” concert that the cameras didn’t spend enough time on her dancers. I hate the “MTV” quick cuts that are the norm for music video today.
