Take a guess at when you will end up being vaccinated

I posted this at the Geeb.

I’ve been trying to reschedule my second Moderna dose to a CVS closer to home, with no luck. Repeated attempts this last week get me no closer than Salinas, which is where my second shot is already scheduled.

I was up at 2 a.m. today due to insomnia, and tried again. At first, the website said it was clogged due to heavy traffic. That’s the first time that happened - maybe the loosening of the eligibility rules starting tomorrow has caused everyone to rush the site. But yay! I eventually got in and not only that, I found a slot in Gilroy, which is right next door to where I live. And I got it on a more convenient day, too!

Keep trying, everyone.

Whelp, my age group (50+) becomes eligible for vaccination tomorrow, April 1. I’ll be hitting covid19.ca.org at 12:01am hoping to make an appointment. However, I just peeked at Shutdown | Vaccine Spotter and it’s not looking good for appointments in the SF Bay Area. It looks like I may need a road trip to get the jab but we’ll see.

The answer is 10:10 am today.

Squeee! Today covid19.ca.gov says I’m eligible! A day early!

…and that there are no appointments available, please use CDC vaccine finder. Which just directs me to pharmacies that have no appointments and don’t think I’m eligible. FFfffff.

I brought up the CVS vaccine finder this morning, just to see if their website was keeping up with the new age eligibility rule. It is! There’s now a spot to check if you’re at least 50 years old. But as squeegee says, no vaccines are available nearby at the moment. I do see plenty in the central valley, in Fresno, Clovis, Madera, however. If you do have to make a road trip out there, at least it’s at a time of the year when it’s pleasantly green and lush.

Yup, I got up at 2am and did the same, no dice, but I’ll keep looking. Maybe I’ll try @suranyi’s tip about getting into Moscone for a jab, as much as I’d dread the 2 hour drive in Bay Area traffic.

Okay! I’ve got an appointment at 5pm tomorrow in Fresno. Going to be a long day driving from Aptos. Worth it.

My college is hosting an on-site vaccination clinic next week, with a local clinic providing the Moderna vaccine. All faculty, staff, students, and their family members over 18 are invited. We are awaiting a response from the sign-up to see if they follow through and what times are available, but it looks promising.

Yay! And just in case a closer one pops up on the website overnight (unlikely), you can grab it up and cancel the original one through a link on the email they sent you.

Drive safely if you do go to Fresno.

I guess I’ll put this here – I asked how many folks got vaccinated at the event I went to. they said “over 100” which seemed low given how busy it was. But then I looked again and they were only open 2 hours.
So they were doing 1/minute (this matches what I saw). They said the number of appointments depends on how many doses they get from the MDH (MN Dept of Health)
I wonder if they got a low amount because the county is doing well (as of 3/30 49% of 16+ folks in my county have had at least one dose)

I’m happy to hear that you got one! To avoid rush hour traffic, you should make an evening of it and get dinner before heading home. I hear that Fresno is lovely this time of year.

Kidding aside, appointments are again difficult to get now that 50 to 64 years olds are able to get appointments statewide. Outliers like SLO County just dropped to 30+.

I am getting my second shot at the local CVS on 4/19 at 12:30. Coincidentally, one of my best friends in town has the 12:45 appointment. We will be getting a celebratory lunch afterwards.

@squeegee “reschedule” your second dose asap. I just checked and they have appointments on 4/24 in Santa Cruz.

Today!

Hmm, how’d you check? If I go to Vaccine Finder, I select either CVS, Rite Aid, or Safeway in this area. CVS has no appointments locally or in April; I can get an appointment in Gilroy on May 4th. Rite Aid won’t schedule 2nd appointments online at all; they’ll schedule your second shot when you get your first. Safeway/Albertson’s tells me no vaccine appointments are available at all.

I actually booked a hotel. No way I want to drive 5 hours in one day over two segments if it can be avoided. I’ve stayed in a hotel exactly once during the pandemic and it felt reasonably safe. They even had a seal you break when you open the room door, like those toilet seat “sanitized for your protection” paper bandoliers Holiday Inn used to use.

Go to CVS
California, Schedule an appointment.
No to the questions.
Schedule Second Dose
Enter date of first dose (today) and then Pfizer or Moderna
“Santa Cruz”

For Pfizer there was a 4/24 in Watsonville
There were Modernas on 5/01 in Los Gatos and Gilroy

Aha, that explains it. I entered Moderna because that’s what I’m getting tomorrow in Fresno. And I must have been mistaken about May 4th and it was really May 1.

I’m going to ask at the Fresno Rite Aid tomorrow if they can schedule me near Aptos; their system doesn’t let me do it myself.

My sister got a CVS vax a few weeks ago in Indio which is over an hour away from her. She was somehow able to change the second one to Hawthorne which is very close to where she lives. I got my first one at a mass vax site set up by the county an hour away. I was able to schedule only my second one at the CVS pretty much down the street so I haven’t gone through the re-schedule process but I am told it’s easy enough. Maybe you need the first one in the books to do that. At least you have something to do tonight.

If memory serves, CVS’s system won’t let you try to schedule a second dose appointment until your first dose appointment is completed and in the past.

That makes sense. I had my first dose elsewhere so I had a different path.

If so, that’s possibly a policy change. I was able to schedule both of my mother’s appointments starting in early March through CVS ahead of time and at the same pharmacy. In fact I’m not sure it even gave an option at that time to schedule just one.

But then again considering how fast things have been changing in the past month, it would not be remotely surprising to me if they were changing their scheduling protocol weekly.
