Take my hand...

…oh, I thought you were Dale!

Okay, what are Mike, Joel, and the 'bots referring to in this particular pop culture reference? People in bad movies can’t look at their hands, shake hands, whatever with their hands without being accused of thinking I/you/he/she/it/they am/are/is Dale. You’d think just once somebody would think it was Chip.

Thanks, guys.

Q: In many of the season eight episodes, when a character’s hand was shown or focused on, Mike or one of the bots say “I thought you were Dale!” or some variation on that phrase. Who is Dale, and what is that a reference to?

A: The reference is to a 1970s TV commercial for Ivory dishwashing liquid. In the commercial, a teenage boy, apparently the boyfriend of teenage girl Dale, mistakes the hands of Dale’s mother for Dale’s (because Mom uses Ivory, her hands are young-looking, ya see) and declares “I thought you were Dale!”
