Ok, it’s been 4 years since I went away to college. Four years of dorm and no-pet apartment dwelling. Four years where the only contact I had with kitties was at the pet store, pound, or my parents’ house many miles away. Four years which are over!
I am bringing home a kitty tomorrow night! Yay!!!
She’s a 12-week old shorthaired jellicle cat. She’s so cuddly and when you pick her up it’s like she has no bones at all! What a sweetie!
Here she was a few weeks ago! She was brought in with a whole litter. I wanted to get her then (I visited and everything) but at the time I had not gotten the new cat-friendly apartment and did not have the kitty funds. She’s the only one left from that litter–scroll down a few to see her baby head shot!
I think I’m gonna name her Dot. But I am open to suggestion if any of you have ideas!
What a beautiful cat! And’s here’s a quote from a cat-lover in my neck of the woods: When you have a cat, you assume certain responsibilities that, in a spiritual sense, may transcend those of a marital or a business relationship.

Kyann22–yes, more than 2 cats generally brands you as crazy cat lady (no offense to, um Crazycatlady). I cat-sat for 10 days, so I temporarily had 4 cats, and I was branded Crazy Cat Lady by my friends, even though they weren’t mine!
I’ve just been through the same situation(finally left college dorms and now in an apt) and I’ve been lookin for a kitten. The thing is, I can’t find the right kitten. There’s been so many times in my life when a friend or relative has like a thousand awesome kittens to give away and I couldn’t take em. It’s been so long since I had the company of a cat and I think one would fit nicely in my new place.
My question is, how do I find the right kitten? I’m not too sure how I feel about the pet stores in my immediate area(center city), and I have no idea where to find an animal shelter in the philly area. Are there any website I can head to with a listing of animal shelters/good pet stores?
Sorry for the slight hijack but there seemed to be a few good cat lovers here who might be able to help
Happy Kitty!!!
Suggestion for finding a kitty: walk into the shelter and see which one you’re drawn to. Let the cat choose you, then you won’t have to worry about making the right choice. I walked into the kitty room, and this big grey poofball with pumpkin eyes looked at me and started to purr. Her name is Stella and I’m her slave.
Another time, we found a kitten on the side of the road. He just kept staring at me, not trusting me for an inch. A couple of days later, Bubba comes for a visit and the kitty just walks right up him and settles on his shoulder. Kitty, now Angus, chose who he wanted to be with.
Welcome back to the cat owner’s world, Little Bird!
Mrs Bookkeeper is definitely a Crazy Cat Lady ™ under October’s definition. A couple of years ago she announced that we had too many cats, we had to reduce the number, and she wasn’t going to get any more - since then we have reduced from 4 to 6.
Onyx (a.k.a. Nixie or Weasel depending on her mood) - abandoned as a kitten by feral mother and found by Mrs Bookkeeper’s co-worker - still a cute little runt after 12 years and increasingly less prone to switch to weasel mode without warning.
Tabby Too, Peach, and Calico (a.k.a. the Three Stooges and all named for their colour) - Mrs Bookkeeper was looking for a kitten after our then only other cat died, and “couldn’t decide which one of the litter she liked best”.
Cleocatra - an abandoned kitten who had moved into Bookkeeper Girl’s boyfriend’s woodpile. After petting her every time she dropped Bookkeeper Girl off or picked her up for a month, Mrs Bookkeeper returned one day with cat as a new family member. (Like I didn’t see THAT coming!)
Chipie - our only male cat, despite his name (finally an ally against a house full of females!). Mrs Bookkeeper adopted him when a friend of Bookkeeper Girl moved back to France with his fiancé and couldn’t take him with them.
Undead, hie thee to Petfinder. I’m sure you can find your perfect kitten there! (Ours came from a shelter we found there, but they weren’t in the shelter long enough to make it onto the site. It’s worth calling the shelters listed in your area even if they don’t seem to have any kitten you want listed).
Ooh I am so jealous! I’ve got another year of dorm life before I graduate, and then I have no idea what I’m doing… must… get… cat-friendly… apartment… I miss my kitties! She’s adorable! Take good care of her!
Haha! Actually, although I am rather small compared to most people, I’m quite large compared to most domestic kitties. (5’2", 120 lbs) I really don’t think I have much to worry about there!
Don’t worry, I won’t! I am definately getting her a friend, but none of the kitties at the shelter seemed right. (999999 <-----Dot just decided that this post needed editing) I’ll be getting her a buddy as soon as I can.
OK! Dot is home and she knows it! I had read all the material about bringing home cats–they will be nervous and shy, keep them in one little room until they are more comfortable, etc. I took this little diva out of the carrier and let her roam the place, just to see how she would do. 30 minutes later she had the place totally cased. She is now the Queen of Everything, including my keyboard. She follows me around and won’t leave the room I’m in, but is bold enough to explore all the nooks and crannies. She already ate some food and drank some water. No litterbox yet, but that should be easy.
OH! She just found the rat cage! Jungle cat mode <<<<ON>>>> This should be fun to watch!
I was worried that she would be quiet when I was visiting her at the shelter. I really wanted a talkitive cat, but she was so sweet and perfect in every other respect that I couldn’t pass her up! After all, I was gonna get her a buddy anyway, I could make sure he/she was noisy. But since she started feeling at home here, she is very talkitive! Such a cute little “meeah!” Yay!
Well, this post is reaching epic lengths, I should stop. So, buh bye for now! And thanks for all the well-wishing!
congrats on the new cat!
We adopted 2 kitten 2 years ago or so and there lots o fun
one of them is a callico girl named spumoni (spu-moe-nee) (thats a french type of ice cream) and she’s the stupid, small, cute, intertaining one
the other is named Lui and he’s perfectly white. he’s the fat, smart, lazy, cuddly one who’s always on your lap
once more congrats and good luck:)
It’s final, Dot is the bestest kitty ever in the history of forever and ever. She’s been following me around the apartment like a little puppy. If she looses me for longer than she’d like, she starts mewing out for me to come find her. I say something back, or mew back, and she comes bounding into the room, almost tripping over herself, just bursting with pride over how clever she is. It’s gonna be hard to leave her in the morning.
Ok, she just scared the crap out of me by leaping onto the back of my chair from behind. This little girl is gonna take some getting used to! J I’m re-learning all these cat-owning skills: checking a chair before I sit down, guarding my food with one hand–eating with the other, walking veeeery carefully so not to bean the little furball who can’t figure out that right between Mom’s feet is not the best place to walk.
I don’t want to lock her in the bathroom tonight (I want a bundle of love to cuddle with), but I would really like her to use the litterbox before I let her around unsupervised.
Anyway, Dot has been walking on my keyboard a lot—I just thought she was being a kitty. But it turns out she really wanted to post a message to all of you! Here you go!
