Talk me off the ledge: Will AI destroy my industry?

The cover art on that album is an argument against AI-generated art in and of itself. Ugh.

Our city has a chatbot on their website for answering questions. After three tries, it forwards your request to a human. I usually get forwarded to the human. But, then, I’m usually asking about finding things on the city website and it’s in the process of being updated. And I really can’t blame it if the locations keep changing.

Artificial intelligence might be coming for your job, just not in a way you might’ve anticipated.

Baltimore County Police arrested Pikesville High School’s former athletic director Thursday morning and charged him with using artificial intelligence to impersonate Principal Eric Eiswert, leading the public to believe Eiswert made racist and antisemitic comments behind closed doors.

Where things are going today:

I asked the AI Studio to answer (in Cockney accent) how I could access this new functionality, the answer was interesting…seems like access might be difficult, but I’m going to apply for a key.

Right, so you wanna get your mitts on this “Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental”, eh? Okay, listen up, here’s the situation as I understand it:

Important Disclaimer: Access to experimental models like “Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental” is highly limited and often temporary. It’s not something you can just sign up for like a normal service. It’s more of an internal testing thing.

Here’s what I know and can tell ya:

  1. Google AI Studio: This is where Google is testing their latest models. You need to sign up for it at https://makersuite.google.com/app/apikey. This may or may not give you access straight away.

  2. Be Patient and Watch: You may have to wait until the latest update rolls out. Make sure you are subscribed to any Google AI and Gemini social media pages.

Basically, the access is tightly controlled, and it’s usually for developers and researchers who are working directly with Google or its AI programs.

Based on my experience, it’s easy to get a key to the AI Studio. I’m not a developer (technically), and they’ve been letting me play in there.

It’s very useful to me, so far, but I haven’t tested the Stream Realtime mode yet. That should be interesting, when I get around to it.

I can vouch for Flash 2.0 Experimental being pretty good at interpreting intent and not too bad at coding.

Meet Tilly Norwood.

Why am I assuming that “talent agents” is less the guys representing Ryan Reynolds and more the stereotypical guy in the one room office with a stack of unpaid bills trying to get washed up actors into commercials?

You’re watching too many bad movies about washed up agents. I’ve been to many, many agents offices, and if one thinks they could get money from hiring out this AI actress, and even better, ink, they’ll do it. It might backfire on them though.

In a similar story, the creator of a fake $100 bill said he is not a counterfeiter but exercising artistic expression, and it is not his fault if the people who pay him for it use the bills.

I do expect the bigs like CAA and William Morris will carefully weigh what they’d lose, which I suspect would be a lot. There might be some prisoner’s dilemma aspect to this as well as they nervously eyeball each other.

I just stumbled across this “AI assisted” “newsletter”. It appears to take news stories from several sources and use AI to blend them into a new article.

From the “about us” page:

The year 2024 marked a turning point in the mainstream adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). As the technology advanced, societal conversations shifted from futuristic speculation to present-day reality, with AI becoming an integral part of various industries and daily life.

Have you ever seen the following movie?:

The Congress (2013, Israel/Germany/Poland/Luxembourg/Belgium/France/U.S., dir. Ari Folman)

It’s about a future in which (among other things) an actor can sell everything about their looks, voice, personality, acting ability, etc. to a movie production company. They then don’t have to do anything related to making movies anymore. In this movie, a fictionalized version of the actress Robin Wright has decided that she’s tired of making movies so she sells all these things to this movie production company. They then use her AI version in some of the movies she makes and she has made money from those films.

By saying that it’s a fictionalized version of Robin Wright, I mean that it’s like the fictionalized version of John Malkovich in this movie:

Being John Malkovich (1999, U.S., dir. Spike Jonze)

For both Wright and Malkovich, the background of their character is sort of like them, but their actions in the movie are different, even though they play themselves.
