I have XP, a Dell, less than two years old. For some reason the task manager will not stay up. I opened it in safe mode, and it doesn’t seem like anything is going on, at least in safe mode, but why am I not able to see task manager?
Does not stay up? By this you mean you cannot get it to come up at all? Not any of the 3 ways?
- You can press CTRL + ALT + DEL and click Task Manager from the Windows Security dialog box.
- You can right click on the Task Bar and click Task Manager.
- You can press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC and Task Manager will open automatically.
Are you logged on as Admin?
Have you run an AV scan in safe mode? I would boot up in safe mode with networking and run an online scan, this one is the best IMO:
On the left, under “popular Tools and Links” run HouseCall.
You almost certainly have an infection that is closing it. You can try Process Monitor instead of Task Manager to see what’s running.
Ok, just got home from errands, will start working on it. I downloaded process manager, and a whole bunch of stuff is coming up, how do I tell what is what?
