My wife’s been listening to it daily since her initial skepticism and says she likes it. It’s not peak lyrics but it’s a fun time and she’s cool with Swift making a “happy” album.
She’s been complaining about all the album variants for the last couple albums though. Especially when it’s dribbled out so you might buy/prepurchase an album and then find out a week later that a different color vinyl is coming out or this one will have a bonus track, etc.
I can’t answer your question, I too hear the Jacksons in the intro of Wood. But when I heard these two tracks, I had to wonder: If Travis is packing a redwood but Taylor’s is bigger, what size of appendage is she swinging?
As others have said there are a few very good songs on this album. But I hate the way she so often writes songs to take revenge on people who have supposedly wronged her. That’s her trademark, I guess, but I find it so childish. For example, “Actually Romantic” is one of the worst songs she ever wrote.
I was your father figure, we drank that brown liquor
You made a deal with this devil, turns out my dick’s bigger
You want a fight? You found it, I got the place surrounded
You’ll be sleeping with the fishes before you know you’re drowning
Whose portrait’s on the mantle? Who covered up your scandals?
Mistake my kindness for weakness and find your card cancelled
I was your father figure, you pulled the wrong trigger
This empire belongs to me
I didn’t make a point of listening to any of the songs on the album but my wife’s Spotify played “Wood” the other day and… this is what people are clutching pearls over in 2025? I guess there’s a “But Taylor Swift” and young girls idolizing her and stuff but that was silly tame. It wasn’t a great song lyrically (IMO) but the tune was catchy. For raunchiness, it was barely at “Squeeze Box” levels for a song that came out fifty years later.
I didn’t get the impression that it was supposed to be subtle. Anyway, I’ll never play it myself but it was a perfectly boppable tune and the blow up over it felt silly after hearing it.
