Teachers need to start packing heat says lawmaker - But what weapon would be best?

I don’t see how this would work, since it would need to be immediately available if it became necessary. Having a teacher by their desk fiddling with a gun as they try to unlock it is not going to be inconspicuous.

If you’re talking about the teacher being disarmed every time their back is turned, a concealed handgun in a proper holster is very secure. You can even get retention holsters like cops use when open carrying that can be concealed for increased security.

But concealment is the most important factor. Make sure the teachers know how to conceal their weapon, and do not allow them to talk about it. It is not going to be taken if nobody knows it is there. As far as I know, most police officers do not use retention holsters when carrying concealed, simply because it is not necessary.

That might work also. But the “key” I was talking about is worn like a ring on your gunhand, and I beleive is magnetic. I am not sure how practical it is, or whether or not it has made it into usage. In other words, the gun only fire when YOU hold it in YOUR hand. Interesting idea, anyway.

I think they meant as in one of the “Smart Guns” that use an RFID chip (usually placed in a bracelet or a ring or something) to tell the gun that the authorized user of the gun is holding it. Without the RFID chip (preferably transmitting from behind the gun), the gun won’t fire. Not sure if they’ve made one that has electronics that can actually survive being fired (though that may have been more of a problem of the prototype being built on a budget rather than any material limitations with current available tech).

Oh noes, Simulpost’d

The best weapon would definitely be the kind of handgun they have in the movies. You know, the kind that is invisibly hidden under the clothing until needed, slides out of the holster effortlessly, makes it possible for someone running full-tilt to accurately shoot the bad guy in the hand so that he drops his weapon and gives up, that can shoot around corners, the kind where the bullet disintegrates if you miss the target, so that it doesn’t hurt innocent bystanders, the kind that exerts a powerful force field that prevents the shooter from being struck by bullets fired by the bad guys, even bullets fired from a much more powerful weapon. That’s the kind of weapon teachers should use in schools.

As far as I am aware, such technology is not reliable yet. And the last thing you want to have happen when you need the gun to fire is for it to not work.

If the technology were available and 100% reliable I would argee it would be a good option. It would have to have been extensively tested though, as it is a lot of stress to put on electronics.

Would it be better if it failed by not firing for for the owner, or faied by firing for anyone at all? They’d need to build in a default mode, should the sensors fail. Sensors require power, and guns will need to be powered to use ID technology, so what should happen if the battery goes dead?

Have you ever heard of a Magicube. That was the flash on a Kodac camera that had it’s own battery. Now we just build batteries into each bullet and stamp an experation date on each one. Can you tell how I consider arming teachers. They already have had added teaching teaching alot that parents should teach. They have check on the kids welfare for many different ways. They have to jump through so many hoops I don’t know how they can do the demands put on them. It’s rediculous. Add in the swat team to their duties.
