Teams announced for The Amazing Race 8: Family Feud Edition

Today on the Early Show they announced the teams for The Amazing Race: Family Edition, which premieres next month:

Early Show article, which includes video.
USA Today article, which goes into a little more detail.

Frankly, I’m disappointed in the casting choices; nine of the 10 teams are traditional parent + 2.3 kids, or a bunch of siblings. What happened to the triple-generation teams? The engaged couple with a set of in-laws? The second cousins, adopted uncles, same-sex parents, etc., all those freaky definitions of “family” that the producers promised? At least none of them are models…we hope…or runners-up from Desperate Housewives.

When the Early Show introduced the African-American team as the “Black” family, I was ROTFL for thirty minutes. (At first I thought, “How RUDE! They could at least use their name…oh, wait…nevermind.”)

And the preliminary CBS web page is up, too, with team bios.

So much for no models – according to the team bios, the Bransen family appeared together in a Pert shampoo ad. And closely related, the Rogers daughter is a former beauty pageant queen, while her mother is a pageant trainer. The Linz family just looks like they stepped out of a Gap ad or something.

I about fell over at the Black family, too. At least their name will be easy to remember…

It will take me five weeks before I can keep track of all these people.

There’s a Dave Chapelle joke in there somewhere.

I’m with you, I’d prefer some less-traditional ‘families’. (3 son-in-laws are intersting) Although I think this will be interesting. I’m still trying to figure out if ‘luggage’-children will be a hindrance or helpful. I’m calling them ‘luggage-children’ since except for whatever challenges Phil has them doing, they will be carted around the word like luggage. But like the past few winners have shown, a strong teammate/weak teammate team does pretty well, so maybe luggage-children will be beneficial.

Frankly, I can never tell what a team is really like from these bios. I don’t mind models, thay can be entertaining. I’m just glad there are no reality show contestants form other shows.

Maybe it’s the parent in me, but these very young children bother me. I thought the kids in this race had to be at least 13 or 14 or something like that. Now we’ve got an 8 year old and a 9 year old. The Race tends to cause team meltdowns and watching an 8-year-old have a meltdown due to stress or jetlag doesn’t strike me as a lot of fun to watch.

I am really not sure this format will work for me. I mean, I hope it does, but it just looks like it will be a trainwreck.
And like Trion said some of these kids seem too young.

They’d originally set the lower age limit to 12, but during the casting process dropped it to 8. So presumably they’d seen a couple of these younger kids and really wanted to include them. Why, I still have no idea; I think it’s an awful idea.

Do we have to wait for the first few episodes, or can we start coming up with cool nicknames for the teams now?

At the non-elimination legs, do the parents have to leave a kid?
I checked the CBS website a few days ago to see if they were starting the casting process for the next regular series, so I could submit an entry. Already missed it by a week.

That’s about right. I guess that’s one reason the early rounds are eliminations.

Now…when we get to a non-elimination round will the kids have to beg?

Well, :smack:. Another strike against this season.

LOL!!! Actually, according to the USA Today article, there are fewer NEL’s this season, which makes no sense since there are only 10 teams…I guess we’re in for a lot of two-parters, or maybe even fewer episodes overall.

I wouldn’t count out the younger kids yet, they might surprise us. If nothing else, it’ll be easier to fit them into the back of a cab, and you can always stuff them in the overhead compartment if all the airplane seats are full. And that youngest kid in the Schroeder family, he looks about ready to take a shotgun to his high school cafeteria…that could work to their advantage.

Can’t wait. I love TAR and this families “twist” looks exciting. I’m kind of disappointed that not every family has minor children in it, but I gues there’ll be more tension with adults competing against children.

Hmmm … I’m still not sure how I feel about this. I know what it was like to travel with me when I was eight years old … those poor parents. sigh

I’ll still watch it, though.

I hope they at least design some challenges to favor the smaller, weaker, players.

“Little Billy, crawl through this conduit for twenty miles and fetch the flag from the end!”

From the spoilers I’ve read the first 4 or 5 legs will be in the US. Mostly historical sights that can be reached by car. Don’t know if the race will make it out of North and South America.

I’ll be rooting for the Blacks. The older son is a black belt and the younger a brown belt in Tae Kwan Do. They could probably kick that Schroeder kid’s butt.

Mark my words: Pokemon tournament.

Uh, can we start the season right by not sharing spoilers?

Sorry about that. Didn’t think it would make that big a difference. It’s all speculation anyway.

Next time I’ll use tags.

It’s not a spoiler…it’s from the USA Today article

Sorry “more time in the US” does not = “From the spoilers I’ve read the first 4 or 5 legs will be in the US. Mostly historical sights that can be reached by car. Don’t know if the race will make it out of North and South America.”

The first is okay, the second is way more information that I want!
