Technology you came into late (or still haven't come into).

Wow, I thought I was behind the times, but I’m positively cutting edge compared to most of you luddites.

Anyway, re the ice-dispensing fridges, they’re still a relative rarity in Australia. Most new fridges sold are without the dispensers, although some of the more upmarket models have them.

In fact I can remember the first time I ever encountered one. My uncle (on his second marriage) married an American woman who insisted upon having one of these funky Yank fridges…that would have been in the late 1980’s. And I can probably count on one hand the number of households I’ve seen with them since.

E-Book sales themselves are holding steady though (slightly growing at ~1% per year) which would make me think the decline in readers is due to more people owning tablets. You can buy a serviceable tablet these days for $70-$100 which makes owning a reader largely redundant. I know true readers have better text displays but I bet tablet screens with a free Kindle app are good enough for most casual users.

I have no idea if I’ve ever owned a fridge that automatically dispensed ice. I hate ice and never use it. I suppose some might have had that function.
I used to have a smart phone and got rid of it due to the fact that I never used any of its so-called smart functions. Well, actually I still have it I just don’t pay for service. It makes a great alarm clock and paperweight.
Twitter, not even going to try that.

Dishwashers and debit cards are two of the greatest inventions ever.

We’ve actively avoided water & ice-dispensing freezers. Too many friends/family who’ve had leaks that resulted in kitchen damage. Plus the machinery takes up too much room inside the freezer.

Americans use way more ice in drinks than New Zealanders do. In NZ when you order a drink in restaurants they ask you if you want ice and then if you say yes they give you one or two ice cubes. I asked why and people say it waters down the drink. And if you order ice tea in a restaurant the waiters have no idea what to do and ask how to you want the ice— in a separate cup? how?
