Ted Cruz Presidential campaign discussion thread

Disagree. Most Dems backed the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, after it became apparent Al Qaeda used it as a planning and launching point for the 9-11 attacks. It was the later, factually-unrelated invasion of Iraq that drew strong Democratic opposition.

Actually, weren’t the plots hatched and coordinated in Germany? Hamburg, IIRC?

Ted Cruz apparently thinks that Common Core is somehow imposed by the federal Department of Education, even though it really was established by a coalition of states, and he plans to tell the Department of Education to end Common Core on the first day of his Presidency.

Then we should’ve invaded Germany instead. A soldier can’t find a decent plate of knockwurst-and-sauerk-- sausage-and-Liberty-Cabbage* anywhere in Iraq.
*Not making that up.

Cruz thinks that gay marriage should be up to the individual states. I wonder how he feels about interracial marriage. I wonder if his own parents’ marriage could be considered illegal under interracial marriage laws.

I’m kind of guessing from the content of the last few posts that everyone’s already lost interest in his candidacy and he’s now a bloated corpse floating in the electoral river.

That’s way too attractive an image for Cruz.

Yet despite Al Qaeda’s continued presence in Afghanistan, and the Taliban’s continued alliance with them, Democrats have rushed to the exits. And at least on SDMB, they’ve made it clear they would not support a ground war against ISIS even if a 9/11 level attack occurred.

Cruz’s candidacy is alive and well and he knows how to play the game. No one’s worked better at getting delegates loyal to him sent to the convention.

Even if Cruz falls short, he’ll probably be the presumptive frontrunner next time around. He’ll probably work to mend fences with the leadership in the interim.

Why would we want to do something that would get more Americans killed and greatly weaken the entire country, which is the lesson learned from the past 15 years?

Generally shooting one’s self in the foot is not the best response to being attacked.

That’s a great debate to have, and I hope we’ll have it this election.

He hasn’t had a long political career, but has he ever mended fences with people before? Maybe he has and I don’t know about it, or maybe he hasn’t but he has just never tried. I agree that he could be the frontrunner next time, but I’m skeptical that he could mend fences.

Cruz’s brand is that he’s the guy ready to stand against the GOP and fight for real conservatism (like trying to shut down the government). I don’t see how he plays nice for four years while preserving his brand.

When the Gov. of Maine hates you, you’ve really hit bottom.

Ever try to imagine Cruz in drag?
Wonder no more.

From the Burnt Orange Report (burnt orange & white are UT’s colors)

The article goes on to explain how he’s hoping to “win” at the convention. And adds this reminder:

That is, becoming the Republican nominee for senator meant he would win the election. Because everyone knows that Republicans always win statewide elections here. So lotsa Texans get too depressed to vote…

Exactly - Cruz may very well end up being the nominee, but if he is, he will have done so by wresting it away from the guy who won the primary contest (I understand that there’s winning and then there’s winning, but Trump is going to have won the most states, votes, and delegates even if he doesn’t have a majority). I know a couple of people who loathe Trump and love Cruz, but at this point they are basically resigned to Trump on the theory that if Trump isn’t the nominee, everyone just wasted all their time voting. The Republican primary electorate isn’t exactly known for its pragmatism, but that’s a pretty powerful argument against Cruz at this point IMHO.

Cruz and Kasich announce they are publicly dividing up the states to defeat Trump.

What took them so long?

If they’re willing to work together … A Cruz/Kasich ticket would be a really strong combo in the general. Republicans can tell themselves that they voted for the sensible “moderate” and overlook Cruz’s rancid personality. At least this way, the Pubs would have a team they could support, unlike Trump who is … well, I was going to say, a gameshow host, but I like game show hosts, so …

Sounds to me like Cruz got spooked by NY, and finally got desperate enough to work it out with Kasich. It took them long enough.
