Tegan & Sara - Is the earlier stuff worth buying?

I’ve known of T&S’s existence for a couple of years, but all I’d known about them was that they were a lesbian duo. That conjured images of groups like the Indigo Girls that aren’t bad, but aren’t exactly great, either. At least to me.

I finally heard one of their songs (“Back in Your Head”) on the radio last year and was quite impressed, but never got around to listening to any of their other stuff until yesterday, when I watched the video for “The Con” on a whim. And then I watched it again. And again. And again. And roughly twenty more times after that.

Good God, they’re awesome! I went out and bought “The Con” on CD yesterday and I’m pretty much blown away by what I’ve heard. These chicks rock!

When I looked them up on Wikipedia, I found that they’ve been recording for quite a few years now and have several albums under their belt. If I like their new stuff this much will I be as impressed by the older CDs?

Not just lesbians, but twin sisters. Their albums get steadily better, in my opinion. The last couple are fantastic, before that, they’re a little trite.

I haven’t heard “The Con”, but I have “So Jealous” and think that it is fantastic. When they come to town, they sell out very quickly. I believe that they are playing bigger venues each time they come to town. Unfortunately their shows have been scheduled for days that I couldn’t make, but I couldn’t believe how much in advance they sell out.

I’m absolutely delighted that their parents used those names. Obviously, they were big fans of Doctor Who.

Seconded. So Jealous is awesome on so many levels.

I’m not a huge fan of them, but I’m kind of a sucker for girl groups, so I’ve checked them out. I’d say “So Jealous” is their best album. (“Walking With a Ghost,” was covered by The White Stripes, incidentally.) The two albums before that, though, do have their nice poppy moments, but are not quite the same level as the last two. You can find little snippets of all their songs on allmusic.com and probably Amazon, so check 'em out.

…and isn’t nearly as good as the original, IMHO. I love The White Stripes, but they had no business covering that very excellent song, also IMHO.

Let’s clear up what I almost thought when I first heard of them, and I know you’re not saying this, but I’m sure I’m not the person whose monkey-brain almost thought this-

Sisters, yes.

Lesbians, yes.

Lesbian sisters- NO!!!

I will not disagree with you here, and I’m still not quite entirely sure what to make of the WS version. I don’t really hate it, but I don’t particularly like it either. I just think it’s pretty weird to hear someone covering a somewhat known song so soon after its release.

Speak Slow from So Jealous is their best song, IMHO.

Pistols at dawn sir for besmerching the name of “Where Does the Good Go” from the same CD.

They are one of my favorite bands and will probably become my #1 most played musical act on last.fm sometime in the next few days.

I saw them in Atlanta this past November (their opening act, Northern State, is amazing as well. They’re basically an all-girl Beastie Boys) and though they didn’t really engage the crowd as much as I’d’ve preferred, they still played wonderfully and I was incredibly excited to find out that they will be playing at this year’s Bonnaroo. Out of everyone playing there, including the headlining acts of Pearl Jam, Metallica, and Kanye West, it is them I am most excited about and I cannot wait to see them again.

Also, the best song off So Jealous is “I Know, I Know, I Know”.
