Tell me about Eve Online

Yeah… don’t do that.
Alternatively, please let me know what system it is and what time(s) you’re normally online.

Grey: Eh… EveUni will do it for free, and flying with some good folks is a much better way to get to learn PvP than paying for a course, IMO.

Bah. I wasn’t alone, it was a dead end system that only connected to my corp’s home system, and we needed to mine Jaspet for the POS. BoB showing up was a bit of a fluke.

Buddies won’t stop a properly fit gank ship before it kills you. Unless they’re fit properly and good at PvP, they won’t stop it even after it kills you.
Besides, Core-Tech Micro Systems (if that’s the corp you’re flying with) isn’t big or fearsome enough to discourage predation. And Aliette may be off the beaten path, but it’s not unheard of for pirates to take detours into lowsec just to see who’s flying.

You do have the advantage that Aliette is next to highsec, so someone couldn’t camp you in (without a wardec, or without killrights). But that’s a reasonably slim advantage.

In any case, do as you will. But mining in lowsec is pretty much never a good idea.

IVY is more of a stepping stone corp that new players can use when they first come into the game, they take new pilots under their wing and teach them a bit of all the aspects of the game.

For the AGONY courses you don’t have to leave your current corporation, just enroll on the course and come along. The courses they run are entirely focused on PvP as well, rather than the broad spectrum education that IVY focuses on.

I know there is sceptisicm about paying for a course but AGONY does run some fantastic courses, I attended their PvP BASIC course when I was six months into the game and thought I knew a fair bit about PvP…I learnt so much on that course and had a blast too!

The offer still stands, if any SDMB members want to attend PvP BASIC I’m happy to pay the course fee for you. Even if you want to pop along to see what it’s all about and then report back I’ll pay the costs for you Finn

Heh, interesting. I might take you up on that, might be fun to give first hand account as someone who’s a bit skeptical.

I am aware of the dangers, as are my corp mates. It was Ravarin by the way, not Aliette. Also, there is a friendly anti-piracy corp that likes to hang around the area, with whom CTMS has good standing. We may be small, but there are a few experienced PvPers in the corp, and we have been talking about organizing some anti-pirate raids.

Now, if someone like BoB or the Goons wanted to take over the system we’d be screwed, but since it’s more of a lowsec pocket in the middle of empire space than a gateway out to 0.0, that’s not terribly likely.

The classes are a laugh and I quite often come along as an alumni just for fun (well, when EvE is playing nicely with my computer…the EA patch seems to be having problems with my onboard Realtek soundcard…quite a few others have mentioned similar problems). I used to go along to help out with the classes when I was in AGONY (taking the rear scout or XO duty) but my play time dropped enough that I dropped out of AGONY and dumped my characters into my own corp for the time being.

One of the latest BASIC classes actually encountered and managed to get a RA Titan to loose off a DD! I think it was calculated that the cost of the DD seriously outweighed the cost of the BASIC frigate fleet and the students were so psyched up about seeing a Titan that they were happy to get zapped in the DD

Would be interesting to hear back from a sceptic on the course, don’t forget that if you’ve been playing the game and PvPing for a while you will probably have to sit through a lot that you might already know though but it should give you a chance to assess whether the basics are being covered for new players.

Oh, in game my main is “Loash” in corp “Demented But Determined”.

AGONY has been in the EVE PvP tournament for 2 years running now. They haven’t won yet, but they are definitely a quality outfit. Here’s some footage of them winning vs. Cult of War.

Interesting. I’ll try to find some time in the next little while… of course, I’m a member a corp that’s in the Gallente militia, so I might end up as a war target for some folks and I’d have trouble crossing long distances of Caldari space.

Still… if and when I get a bit bored with FW, I’ll check it out. Thanks for the offer.

No problems about being a war target. AGONY asks that course members state what wars they are involved in when signing up for a course and there is a strict ‘no fire’ rule on class participants (enforced too, in case anyone decides to play silly buggers). You aren’t even under any obligation to fire on blues if you encounter them when roaming, although depending on how many blues you have it could make the 0.0 portion a bit boring.

As for getting across Caldari space (all the courses normally start in Nonni), can you pod run it or do the NPC militia fire on pods? Are you even allowed to dock at Caldari stations if you are in the Gallente militia? You can tell I’ve not been involved in FW can’t you

As far as I’m aware, they don’t fire on pods. But players who are gatecamping, do. I was just podded for the first time in a great many months due to a crazy lag spike and the game’s broken overview-updating-after-you’ve-clicked-on-a-destination glitch, and tbh I’d rather not replace all my Rogues again. Blah.

We’ll see. To be honest, I’ve begun to get fed up with FW already, due to poor fleet structure/FC’s/combat organization. It seems to all be either ganking noobs or fighting gigantic blobs, no half-way point.

I may put in an application to one of the northern powers.

But I’ll definitely keep this in mind. Heck, I could probably squeeze an article out of it and end up getting paid for my trouble too.

Speaking of which, the Tribune is always looking for new writers and if anybody has any writing talent and would like to make 20 mil ISK per page of text, the Tribune might be a good way for you to share your experiences/views of EVE while making some decent cash.

What sorts of things do they want people to write about? Anything and everything? Or just war stuff?

We generally publish guides, news, personal stories/views and even the occasional bit of fiction.

Any feedback from the first few weeks of faction warfare? I’m tempted to make an amaar alt and this might be a good excuse to do just that.

There are a few posts scattered through the thread, I’ve written one or two myself.
Scrapheap has a longish thread on it too.

Just started because a friend wants to play … name in game is Aruvqan.

Are we going to do a SDMB corp?

So far I played the basic tutorial and I really dont think I like it all that much. Too much like real live. GO here, mine this, wait until the hold is full and go refine/sell … take this widget over here for me…

So kill me, I like having people running around and interacting other than in a fast scrolling chat function=( if I want to chat with someone I can log into ICQ.

PvP

'nuff said.

The tutorial tells you a little bit about how the interface works, but it’s really only barely touching the surface of the gigantic underwater mountain that is EVE. OK, so that’s maybe a weird metaphor, but really you should play a little more before you make up your mind. Did you see that video I linked to? Keep in mind that the majority of the ships and weapons you see in it are built by players and sold on the in-game market.

My corp, Core-Tech Micro Systems, isn’t SDMB only but there are 3 of us in it now. We mainly do mining operations and manufacturing, but several guys do mission running (the missions are fun in groups) and we are trying to organize some antipirate operations too. Pirates in EVE refers to other players, not NPCs; those are called rats. Or, you know, you could become a pirate and steal other people’s crap if you prefer. Just don’t do it near Stegette system.

Woo Core-Tech Micro Systems! A great corp for a newbie. They pay well.
