Tell me about Everett and Laird

The Tigers signed Adam Everett for SS yesterday. He has had shoulder troubles. He is a weak hitter. Apparently they see the defense with Renteria as a problem and are doing a short term fix. There is a minor leaguer a year or 2 away.
Then they traded for Gerald Laird for catcher. He is another weak hitter.A lifetime 255 with little power.
That puts Inge,Laird and Everett in a otherwise strong hitting lineup.Obviously they are addressing the defense at the expense of offense. I am not loving this.

They seem to have a problem with moderation.

First the loaded up with young fast arm pitchers, and almost made it, but didn’t have the power. they they added a rediculous amount of power and got worse because they had no defense or team cohesion. And now they are going totally in the field.

Laird is a doubles hitter. Last time we had a good doubles hitter was Sean Casey. That worked out rather well.

Laird also calls a game rather well, or so I hear.

Everett was the best defensive shortstop in baseball before he got hurt. If he can get back to anywhere near that level, he is worth playing even if he can’t hit. He was cheap, so it is worth the chance. A low risk, moderate reward move.

Laird can’t hit righties, but he is useful enough as a platoon make. The pool of available catchers is really weak.

The Tigers supposedly have a shortstop prospect coming up, which is why Renteria only had a 1 or 2 year contract and why Everett is only getting one year as well.

Iorg and Danny Worth are SS s in the minors. They hope one takes the next step.

Isn’t Iorg the Mormon one?

Yes
