Tell me about Howard Stern.

I loved the time on Channel 9 when John asked newswoman Sue Simmons if she ever “cracked at rat” on the air. She was very good natured about it and I loved “crack a rat” so much I use it to this day and that might have been more than 15 years ago. My 6 year old even says it.

John is now the announcer on the Jay Leno show.

I loved when they were playing John’s audition tapes on the air and he kept pronouncing “Pamela Anderson” as “Pamerler Anderson”.

I loved his Channel 9 show. At that point, I had only heard OF him and never heard his show. We got WOR in Northern NY through some fluke, so that was my first exposure to him. My mother and I would watch it every Saturday night.

I think one of my favorite Howard moments is from a few years ago, when Hank, the Angry Drunken Dwarf (R.I.P.) was answering music trivia with Gary. He was absolutely amazing! And hearing Howard’s reaction every time he got another answer right was hilarious. I think that was the same show when he ended up completely passed out on the sofa, wasn’t it? Now that he’s dead, that part is a little sad now, but at the time, it was funny.

For awhile, I wanted to be on Stump the Booey, but that one couple from Albany had to ruin it, by the dude offering his girlfriend’s nudity if he lost. Now everyone has to do it. I beat him every time, dammit!

Pardon the non-sequitur, but she doesn’t do anything for me. She’s obviously very beautiful, but to me she looks plastic - almost like charicature of a beautiful woman. Exactly the type of woman I would have thought Howard would go for.

Howard has some gorgeous girls on the show and all those girls always go on and on about how beautiful Howard’s girlfriend is. I don’t think so. She looks old in the face*.

*There are many beautiful ladies in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and so on. She seems to have aged herself by too much tanning and other things. Nice body, icky face.

The movie also barely mentioned his time as NBC’s afternoon DJ. Not one mention of “They’re Coming to Take Me Away”, his signature song at the time. When you heard that on WNBC, you knew that the next thing you’d hear would be Howeird.

That’s nice, except that September 12, 2001 was a Wednesday and not a Friday. Next time you’re going to get up on your high horse make sure you’ve got your underlying facts straight, otherwise it lessens your credibility.

Your comment was 8 hours late.

Now that he’s back in streaming audio, you should give my favorite talk radio host a listen. Paul Harris, himself a former DC-area DJ and currently on KMOX, the Voice of St. Louis, 1 - 6 PM Central.

Did Stern do something unpleasant on 11/9?

Actually, as I recall, no. Heard the show later. He pretty much mirrored us all. Stunned disbelief, raging anger, the whole nine yards. Truthfully, he really helped me get through the next few days, gave me a feel of connection to the world outside my window, as I drove back into the City. He did, as I recall, emphasize that while we wanted to kill these bastards, dig 'em up, kill 'em again, then wrap them in bacon and piss on their corpses, it wasn’t all muslims, just these specific SOBs.
Words not his. Hm. Ya know what, I’ll get a better cite of the time.
Here we go, show summation

News, with the personal touch, calling and making sure his loved ones were safe.

I liked the movie, I liked the first book, I cannot stand his radio show. Been a while since I heard it, I admit; last time I listened, he didn’t say anything funny, he spent most of the time whining about how little respect he gets in H’wood and spent the rest of the time humiliating Stuttering John to the point of tears. There was one semi-funny bit interviewing Peter Falk’s daughter who was plugging her book; Ba Ba Booey did an imitation of Falk that was so dead-on the girl gasped and said “Oh my God…”

I saw the TV version once or twice. Yawn.

You know, re-reading that transcript really hurts. And Bin Laden’s still running around and laughing.

I think Howard’s move was based on the great offer he got and the fact he was about over it with radio anyway. The deal was great, he gets paid whether anyone buys the product or not so he has nothing to lose. Robin apparently isn’t going because she can’t take the risk. She isn’t as financially set as Stern, I assume.

I read his unauthorized biography (Can’t recall the author) which was Private Parts without Howard’s spin but it was flattering nontheless.
I have always been very curious as to what really happened between him and Allison. She at least had half a brain whereas this Beth girl sounds so darn ignorant when she is on the radio. She sounds like a little girl with her first crush. But whatever…

I listen occassionally and agree that I enjoy the interaction between the cast members rather then the silly interviews with porn stars. That is when I am switching stations but as a female, that just doesn’t interest me. Maybe it appeals to his male listeners more and that is why it continues. Ironically the parts that don’t have to be “pleeped” I find the most entertaining.

Seems like the biggest risk to her career would be to seperate from Stern. Even if Stern’s satelite show flops and she is out on her own, she wouldn’t be any worse off than going out on her own now. Or am I missing something more obvious?

Howard does some of the best celebrity interviews. If they can take a joke, he’ll bring out a side of these people that you usually don’t see. He’s an intelligent guy who can talk on any subject, and it’s always a conversation more than an interview, which puts them at ease. Another part of it is that Howard’s kidding also extends to himself and he tends towards lots of self-depreciating humor. The result is they seem to have fun, thus they tend to be willing to talk about their foibles. Perhaps it’s cathartic for some guests just to be themselves on air rather than a stage persona. Nor does he back down on giving praise where he thinks it’s deserved. He can be effusive with it.

And then of course, just as entertaining are the celebrities that can’t take a joke. They make great grist for his mill. They make themselves look like the silly, pompous asses that most of them probably are.

I thought Robin was going to Sirus. She’s just also doing a talk show.

And the interview thing was so true. His interview with Ringo Starr was amazing. For one thing, he brought a rabid fanboy in (a VP at CBS), used him for talking points, and kept him under control. Ringo actually answered a lot of fan myth in that interview, like what happened when the Beatles broke up the first time. Very long, but very pleasant interview.

Or as my wife’s Colombian mother would say, “Body like the palm tree, face like the coconut”.

I had only heard of the Howard Stern phenomenon while living in Boston. Then, after WBCN’s evening DJ high-tailed it for LA, they started rebroadcasting Howard’s morning show at night. From the minute I first heard him until the minute or two later that I turned him off, I have never been able to fathom his popularity. I have seen interviews with him. I have watched his cable show for about two minutes at a time. I can’t stand his work at all. And not because I’m offended, but because I’m BORED OUT OF MY MIND. Not one person on his show has any sense of pacing, and they’ve been doing this how long?.

Robin, Gary, Fred and Artie are all going to Sirius with Howard. I’m lucky enough to have a job where I can listen to it while I work, so I hear him every day. His interviewing skills are amazing. He won an award last year for his great interview with Jim Carrey. I’m hoping the Sirius (or ah-AH-ah, as they are forced to refer to it on the show so as not to be accused of broadcasting an infomercial) boombox can pick up the signal inside my building. His new show will only be Monday through Thursdays, but he’ll also be producing 3 other shows on the station.

I’m not a big fan either, but questioning his expertise on that matter is asinine. Obviously he’s doing something right, as he’s garnered the highest ratings of any DJ ever.
