Tell me about pot.

My drug of choice is alcohol. I know nothing about marijuana.
I’m sure there are people out there who can answer some questions.

  1. Do people typically smoke leaves, buds, stems, seeds, roots or all of the above?
Does on of these contain more THC than the other?
  2. Is it better to use a pipe or a bong or make a cigarette? Are there any advantages to each?
  3. Do different people feel different effects? Are some people immune?
  4. I see in the movies that people take one puff and say “Whoa, that’s good stuff.” Should the effects be felt after one puff?

Thanks

  1. Buds.
  2. pros and cons to each.
  3. Different people seem to experience the effects differently. Immunity is in the eye of the partaker, IMHO.
  4. If you are lucky, one hit is a tiny bit more than enough.

Pot is my drug of choice, but alcohol, like Avis, tries harder.

ETA: comparing alcohol and pot…Take whatever negatives about alcohol you can think of and erase them, then take the positives and enhance them. IMHO, what you wind up with is cannabis.

Before this thread goes any further, I would just like to remind people of the rules about discussions of drug use:

  1. Stems and seeds can also be smoked too, but these are considered something to do only if you’re desperate. They contain less THC and are harsher.
  2. I don’t know a whole lot about this, but it seems people prefer bongs when at home. Their main disadvantage is that they are not portable, where pipes and especially joints are preferred.
  3. Yes. I doubt anyone is immune, but highly resistant certainly.
  4. I think the results of this follow #3

I disagree. Lots of smokers seem to pretend that there are absolutely no cons, and that everyone should stop drinking and start smoking. This sounds like wishful thinking at best. Does pot taste better? Does it provide a stronger disinhibition? Does it work stronger for more people? I think not.

Keep in mind that for me it’s been years – actually, more like decades. But as I remember, I never felt the effects immediately. It would usually take a minute or three.

As for pot being superior to alcohol in every way, I disagree. As thelurkinghorror hinted at, alcohol tends to lower inhibitions. Pot tends to raise them. That’s the biggest reason I don’t partake anymore. The creeping paranoia go to be too much.

That’s always been my complaint/problem with alcohol. I can count the number of times I’ve said “That last shot, that was the one I shouldn’t have had :smack:”.

I’ve been “having the spins”, spontaneously puking, drunk. I’ve never regretted taking that last toke (other than “Dude, this as high as it gets :o, save it for later”).

  1. Most of the above ground parts of the plant contain at least small amounts of cannabinoids, the psychoactive compounds including cannabidol (CBD, which gives the dopey, “stoned” effect) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, which gives the uplifting, “high” effect), but these tend to be concentrated in the trichomes, or crystals, which form on the buds and, to a lesser extent, the leaves and stems. Seeds are generally undesirable, as they taste unpleasant and have a tendency to pop when burned, and roots aren’t something I’ve ever tried, or heard anything about in terms of being smokeable, I assume if they were any good it would have come to my attention by now.

  2. It’s mostly down to personal preference and circumstances. As has been mentioned, pipes are portable and joints can be made or taken anywhere you can get away with smoking it, while bongs tend to be smoother, as the water cools the smoke, allowing the user to inhale a greater amount without coughing, but can be pretty limited, portability-wise. Vaporizers are smoother still, as they work by heating the grass to the point at which THC vaporizes, ~140c IIRC, without setting fire to the plant matter and producing irritating smoke.
As well as practicalities, some people just see anything other than a joint as “too strong” since they don’t want to get too stoned and waste the rest of the day.

  3. As with most (all?) drugs, effects can be subjective, and I have heard a few people claim that cannabis has no effect on them, although I’ve never gone “Alright, I’ll test you. Smoke THIS!” Before handing them a massive doobie and watching for their eyelids dropping, so I can’t be certain of those claims’ veracity.

  4. If it is good stuff, a toke or two is usually enough to indicate that much, at least as far as taste goes. For several smokers that I have known, taste is as much a factor as potency in determining whether a particular bit of puff is good.

  1. As mentioned above, the buds are where the highest concentrations of THC are present. The leaves would be the second most potent, stems the third, seed might have THC resin attached to their outsides due to the fact that they come from inside the bud, but internally they have no potency. Same goes for the roots.

  2. Medical people who advocate the use of marijuana medicinally all agree that the vaporizer is the best method to “smoke” marijuana. If used properly it heats the plant material to the optimum temperature so that only the THC “burns”. As for the methods you listed none really have much of a benefit, other than that pipes and bongs will keep the resin off your fingers and keep you from reeking of pot. When you smell pot on someone it is usually on their fingers and breath (from the resin on their lips, even more true for people with mustaches). and generally pipes and bongs are more efficient.

  3. While people certainly have different tolerances, no one is immune to it effects. The “feeling” that comes from smoking marijuana has more to do with the potency of the pot itself than the person smoking it.

  4. Again depending on the potency, you could feel it immediately after one “toke”. Heavy users usually require a higher dose to get the desired effect but some people also believe there is a reverse potency to marijuana, so that an experienced smoker takes less to get high than someone new to the drug. This is especially true when a regular smoker goes without for a long time; when they smoke again they usually get a very strong effect.

There are definitely cons to smoking pot; IMO they all have to do with damage done to the lungs which is inevitable if you are smoking something. Does it taste better? That is a matter of opinion, some pot has a better taste than others and a lot of people will tell you that different forms of alcohol taste horrible. Does it work stronger for more people? Again this really is a matter of potency. Small doses of high quality marijuana certainly have a stronger effect than small doses of all but the most powerful alcohol (ie distilled moonshine). At high doses marijuana is no where near as physically debilitating as alcohol. As for breaking down inhibition, well if that is your goal have a few drinks, but it can go too far very fast and wind up with many more regrets than good times. The worst thing that usually happens to you when you are smoking is an encounter with the police.

Pot certainly is not for everyone it can turn smart people into bricks and stupid people into denser bricks that think they are smart, but when compared to alcohol on an overall basis it is a wonder that one is legal and the other is not.

Is there an “antidote” to pot-induced paranoia?

Benzos would work perfectly well here, but I can’t imagine why someone would consider administering a benzo to a paranoid pot smoker. Pot-induced paranoia is harmless and doesn’t last all that long, benzos are by and large pretty dangerous, especially with repeated use.

Pot makes you stupid.
Pot makes you hungry.
Stick with the alcohol Blood.

Smoke in a place you feel comfortable… If you do not have to worry about some authority figure kicking down your door every time you smoke, paranoia generally does not occur.

lol at Benzos… what is this 1950`s NY city

Haven’t read the whole of the thread, pure anecdotal experience here :

  1. two big “schools” : those who smoke the dried leaf, and those who smoke the packed resin, usually packaged as a sort of hard brick which one separates into tiny flecks and sprinkles on tobacco. Both sides usually claim their way fucks you up better/quicker - my own opinion is that bricks do fuck you up a lot faster, but it’s not as pleasant or durable as dried leaf.
  2. Meh. Smoke is smoke. Eating the THC in baked goods & whatnot definitely is different (if only because the high catches you unawares), but other than that I reckon it’s a wash.
  3. Effects not only vary from individual to individual, they vary from hit to hit. There are some common “threads” from one joint to the next (for example, I could always feel myself thinking waaaay faster than I could enunciate or write it), but beyond that, and based on fairly unusual use (I smoked maybe once a month, tops) that’s the only stereotype I got. Any pot will however make you feel thirsty and/or very hungry afterwards. I haven’t met anyone who never got the munchies.
People who smoke a whole lot do get used to it overtime though - a dose that fucks you up right and proper might only mellow out the brother who sold it to you.
  4. Definitely not. However, for an experienced user, the taste itself and the burning sensation a toke gives you are certainly indicators of how strong the hit is or how “loaded” the joint was. However, real life potheads usually don’t go around congratulating each other on how strong that shit was, least not the ones I grew up with and toked with. We just enjoyed the buzz, man.

(oh, and all that being said, and while I did smoke da ganja when I was in uni, I still think beer’s the thing - being drunk makes you feel like you’re better than you are, or makes you feel like you’re one slow minded motherfucker, but in any case you still feel like yourself. When I’m high, I don’t feel like I’m in control, and that’s just not right. YMMV)

Another factor here is that, in contrast to the 1960s and 70s, it isn’t just “marijuana” anymore, but there are scores of strains on the illicit MJ and quasi-legal MMJ markets. The strains vary in the amounts of CBD and THC they contain, and genetically whether they’re subspecies sativa or indica. The strains have flavor qualities that are often reflected in the name, and these would normally be identifiable by a knowledgeable smoker after one or two puffs.

It used to be said, and it was probably true, that every pot smoker started out on regular cigarettes. While that’s certainly not the case today, it’s probably still true that current or former tobacco smokers generally prefer joints, which, these days, often actually resemble manufactured cigs with a filter-like tip at one end–quite different from the crude affairs of the 1960s.

  1. answered pretty well I think.
  2. When I was younger and in my heavy pot-smoking days, we frequently used a bong. A bong is probably the easiest way to get really, really, high really quickly because it allows you to take a large amount of smoke into your lungs at one time. The bigger the bong, the more this is the case. The water cools down the smoke and some ice cubes will help even more. I have absolutely no desire to ever be that high again and so I couldn’t even tell you how long it’s been since my last bong hit. A bowl/pipe was good when I used to take a poke before bed occasionally because I could control exactly how much I used and not waste any. A relatively tiny amount could last me weeks or even months. Joints kinda have a social quality to them. In Europe joints are always rolled with tobacco so you get much less stoned. There’s also the dugout/bat. This is good for inconspicuous use. It’s very convenient and easy. You put the pot in the wooden dugout and just smash the bat in there so it fills the opening at the end. A chillum is like a pipe but is straight. It’s designed to not ever come in contact with your mouth so it’s useful for not spreading germs.
  3. Answered, but in my experience a small few people seemed often to claim they weren’t feeling any effects even though I saw them inhale a significant amount.
  4. I think people are generally referring to taste which can tell you a lot about the quality. But no, the effects are not instant. It takes a few minutes.
