The previous threads helped a little, but I have more questions. The car in question is a 2000 Nissan Altima. How difficult is it to install? It seems that the going rate is like $150 to install, which seems odd since prices for the unit itself ranges from $50-$100. I take it that it’s a lot harder to install than a headlight. Not to get into too much IMHO, but are any brands better than others? How long would it take? What other pitfalls do I have to look forward to? Is it easier to go to a professional? Anything else? Thanks for the help.
I installed one in my 98 truck. 6 months later, I took it out myself, too. There were, uh - problems. I imagine the problems stemmed from the additional hardware I had to buy to bypass the passive theft deterrent system which is now standard on probably all cars. The system worked fine for the first few months, but on a few occasions, my vehicle would not start for an hour or so. Big problem, that.
It took me several hours over two days to install. (Had to purchase additional part) Took me less than an hour to remove.
Point being, I really wish I had spent the few extra bucks to have it installed by a pro.
You may want to check and see if having one of these affects your warranty (if applicable).
When I bought a new Mazda, I wanted an automatic starter and the dealer told me that it would void my warranty because they are a known fire/electrical hazard.
Ditto, bought one, installed it myself on my Cavalier (3 days in the cold, on my back trying to get up under the dash in a small car is worth the price of a pro install in and of it self). I had problems with mine as well. They asked me to send it in and instead of being smart and sending just the UNIT in, I was dumb and pulled the wiring harness out as well. They sent me a new one which is now in my basement somewhere. Next time I’m having someone else do it.
