I’m going to this show tomorrow (sunday) with Isis and Jesu and some other band. I understand they’re sort of arty metal. They’ve been highly praised by a friend with great taste in heavy rock, but I’m wondering if any dopers know anything about them. Also, am I going to be surrounded by teenagers? (It’s an all ages show.)
They sound a lot like Jesu’s self-titled album; perhaps a bit less industrial and more droning. Good stuff.
Thanks, Ultrafilter. I was wondering if you’d reply.
Well, I saw them and they kicked ass. Not quite what I was expecting, but they were really good, heavy and ambient at the same time, which isn’t easy. Jesu didn’t show, but the other band, Torche, was pretty good.
I did feel very old.
Yeah, Isis are incredibly heavy while also being incredibly atmospheric and ambient, which as others said is a tough ratio to maintain. Great band, killer jams. I tend to think of their fanbase as being older than teenager, but I’m not sure.
Isis and their ilk seem to have a pretty strong appeal to the metalcore crowd, who tend to be pretty young, if not actual teenagers.
I’d WAG the average age as being early twenties, with a fair number of teens. That was what the floor looked like, the upper areas of the club may have been somewhat older. I had the bar almost to myself, and wound up getting pretty toasted.
I don’t know why they should skew so young. They’re a good band and a lot of older people would like them if they heard them.
