Tell me about Up With People

Up, up with people. They’re the best kind of folks we know. If more people were for people. All people everywhere would have a lot less people to worry about and a lot more people to care!

I made the mistake of making fun of them on on this board years ago and was taken to task for it.

I vaguely recall seeing a live performance by one of their touring groups at my small Ohio River town’s middle school auditorium in the early Seventies. I saw 'em on TV a time or two back then, as well. My reaction? Meh.

Thanks for this. LOL.

I had a similar experience with the Continental Singers. Went to a performance, got to audition aftewards and was accepted. I don’t remember what the cost was, but I asked my voice teacher if he thought I should try to raise the money. He said absolutely not, with what they made from ticket and record sales they should pay the performers. He didn’t use the word scam, but he may have said unethical.

Did anybody hear Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me this weekend?

A former co-worker was a in the stage crew in the group when Glenn Close (then known as Glennie) was a member. He said that she was kind of a snot and is hurt that she apparently refuses to talk about her experience in the group when she is interviewed.

A good friend of mine from college was in UWP in 1984 or so. She took a year off of college to tour with them. She said that it wasn’t a Christian group but, at least in her class, the membership was largely Born Agains. She had a close bond with her castmates for the first few years and kept in touch with them but that faded. None of them were invited to her wedding ten years later.

I got a kick out of the Bright and Shiny [del]cult[/del] group in that classic comedy Bubble Boy.
