So I got an early X-mas present. Some Jack Daniel’s whiskey.
I drink, but not whiskey. What’s the best way to enjoy this stuff?
Also, I’m thinking of getting a flask. What kind is best? Care and cleaning of?

Jack Black? Jack Green?
IMHO…black is a sipping whiskey. Green is for the abominations.
I take mine neat with a water chaser.
Why do you need a flask?
Sorry, Black.
Don’t need a flask, just one would be cool and I don’t know anything about them.
Flasks are incredibly cool. Like they say, “When you’ve got a flask, every drink’s a double!” As for whiskey, I’m weaning myself onto JW black, but am no expert whatsoever.
Most people I know drink Jack Daniels mixed with Coke (never Pepsi!), or perhaps with a splash of water or a couple ice cubes (“on the rocks”). I’m a Maker’s Mark bourbon drinker, which is a specific type of whiskey made in Kentucky, and I only like it with a little water or ice – never Coke to dilute the flavor. Most American whiskeys and bourbons are best for sipping, but then again, I’ve never been a fan of shots anyway.
Never been a big fan of Jack myself so I would say mix it with ginger ale (this is a fine drink, Jack and coke is disgusting. I don’t want my coke to have a smokey after taste.) But while I don’t like Jack much, I am a big fan of Bourbon. Jack is not Bourbon, in case anyone was wondering, it is a Tennessee whiskey which are charcoal filtered to give that trademark smokey sweetness to the drink. I am a bit of a snob when it comes to this kind of stuff so take all my advice with that in mind.
With a fine upscale whiskey of any sort (single malt scotch, good quality Irish whiskey, bourbon, etc.) putting just a splash of non distilled water into the whiskey will release many flavors and aromas that you wouldn’t be able to notice without the water. The rule of thumb that I follow is one straw full of water to every shot of whiskey. That way you aren’t diluting the whiskey much, but are releasing the flavors and aromas of the drink. I don’t like cold whiskey myself, but I know many people who like it on the rocks. If you put ice in it though, be careful not to over ice. One to two normal sized cubes will be fine.
If your whiskey is a high enough proof (over 100) you can make Manhattans, which are one of my favorite mixed drinks. The key to a good Manhattan (IMHO) is to use a spicy whiskey like an American Rye (not to be confused with Canadian Rye) or a Corn heavy (traditional) bourbon.
Whiskeys of all types mix well with Ginger ale and lemonade. You hear a lot about coke, and I like bourbon in coke too, but mostly when I want coke all I want is the coke.
Pour your whiskey into a nice sized glass with lots of room at the top. When I have a good whiskey I use wine glasses to drink it, but any larger glass will do. Enjoy the aroma, swish it around on your tongue, admire the color. Treat it like you would a wine or a brandy.
Or you could just shoot it fast and chase it with a nice cold dark beer. Whatever works for you.
Check out this website for lots of good info on whiskey in general and Bourbon in particular. They have a very friendly and knowledgeable group on the boards too.
Let me try that link again.
