Although I haven’t been officially diagnosed with it yet (I have an appointment to see the doctor next week), it’s what I think I have. It’s the only thing that fits all of my problems exact, including the things that bring attacks of it on.
Please note: I’m not asking for a diagnosis or opinions on what I could have. I already suspect it’s BPPV, as you can tell from the title. I’m just asking what posters who have it experiences with it are.
Oh, I have it. The last time I had an episode, I tried the Epley maneuver, which I couldn’t complete because I had to get up and barf. (So the Epley is definitely doing something to the particles in my inner ear.)
You can teach yourself the Epley maneuver by watching YouTube videos. The videos claim that people are instantly cured. Of course, I tested positive for BOTH ears when I tried this, and did the Epley on the side I thought was the worse problem. Maybe I picked wrong, or maybe the Epley cures one side while making the other side 10x worse.
For me the only thing that helps is complete bedrest for about 24 hours.
I woke up in the middle of the night about 10 years ago with vertigo. It was probably the scariest thing that ever happened to me. The rest of that night was awful. Over the next couple days, the positional symptoms developed and then it gave all the classic symptoms of BPPV. Epley seemed to help. Within a couple weeks, the symptoms slowly tapered away and never returned, thank heavens.
I’ve had two “episodes” of BPPV, both went away in a relatively short time and were manageable once I learned how to get up from different positions (especially getting into and out of bed). The Epley maneuver definitely helped me.
Best advice aside from Epley: be very careful about tilting your head past 90 degrees back (i.e. straight posture while standing or sitting). That was the cause of almost all dizzy spells other than getting into or out of lying down. Get out of bed by rolling onto your “good” side if you have one, keeping your head and neck very still, and rising slowly whilst still sideways into a sitting position.
I’ve had the occasional spell of the dizzies. My home-brew easy Epley is very effective; if I start to get a hint of spinning, I make a note to flop about on the bed the next time I have an empty stomach. It’s quite unpleasant as it’s going on, but it’s so effective.
I’ve found that my symptoms are exacerbated by dehydration.
Nice tips about the low BP and dehydration – I will check those out during my next episode. Dehydration is definitely a possibility because when I have vertigo, I can’t get out of bed to drink stuff, and I limit my intake anyway because I don’t want to keep getting up to go to the bathroom either!
