Tell me about your Ruger MKII

I am looking hard at a KMK512GC (it’s a special/limited run thing), I have gotten back into rimfire recently and it’s so much fun I want a MKII (ain’t I smooth, I typed all of that without using the “G” word!).

Mine’s about as basic as you can get. 4" barrel, non-adjustable sites, blue finish.

Got it as a birthday present from a girlfriend, a roommate “accidentally” put it in his car trunk and it was taken by the police, struggled with the cops to get it back, had to get a new case, lock and magazine for it because the originals were “lost” by the ex-roommate.

I got one for my girlfriend, and made her a nice leather shoulder holster for it. Started to make one for myself, but I lost my 4/40 job and lost my Friday hobby days. (Actually, I didn’ lose the job; the contract was ending, and I got a different job before I was laid off.)

I’ve only used it a few times. It’s not an easy hobby to have when you live in L.A. and the outdorr ranges you go to are closed. And with my collection, each piece tends not to be used a whole lot.

I have the target, non bull barrel, version. The only bad thing I can say about it is the front sight is sharp - gives true meaning to a “blade” style sight - for the price it can’t be beat!

I’ve got the 22/45, which is a Mark II action on a synthetic grip meant to duplicate the grip width and angle of a Colt M1911 pistol.

The reason they did this is because target pistol competitions are frequently in smallbore (22) and largebore (45) sizes, and it’s easier for competitors to get used to one style of grip.

Anyway, mine’s terrific. Accurate, reliable and a joy to shoot. Only drawback is that stripping it to clean it is a bit of a pain.

I highly recommend these if you’re in the market for a 22 pistol! Another piece of advice- go check the local gun shows for the best price. Often you can play the dealers off against each other and haggle them down pretty low.

I have a really old one, it might even be a Mark I, I don’t know, it doesn’t say anywhere on it. Can anyone tell me how to tell?

Pros: Virtually indestructable, fairly accurate, fun and inexpensive to shoot.

Cons: Fixed black sights that are kinda hard to see. Safety button could be better. Mine doesn’t lock back after the last round.

A lot of competative shooters use the bull-barrel style, so you know the basic mechanism must be pretty good.

I say go for it.

I had a bull barrel for a few years. It didn’t like yellowjacket rounds but was OK with round nose. Very reliable, accurate, and cheap to practice. Quality stuff.

My friend has a Mark 1 target, the only difference between that and my Mark II is that his bolt does not hold open on the last shot.

Allright, here is the shopping list for my “plinker from Hell” (MWAHAHAHAHA!!):
Ruger KMK512GC (slab side 5 1/2" bull bbl, ss), Volquartsen Accurising kit, Hogue fingergroove grips, Volquartsen compensator (w/o sight), Leupold M8 2x20 EER scope, Wiegand “Weaver” base, T/C Maxima rings.

For less than $900.00 I will have a tackdriver that should last a lifetime (or 2) (happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday Unclviny…, it’s nowhere near my birthday but I need an excuse).

Have a MkI and a MkII. They’re both good pieces. Only criticism is that the MkII is the most rust-prone piece I have ever owned. I don’t have any problem with the MkI or with any of my other blued ones, just the MkII.
