Telling someone their premise is wrong is threadshitting now?

What’s that got to do with the OP under discussion?

I think Colibri was trying to tell you that your premise is flawed.

What does the fact that you were warned for being a jerk in Cafe Society have to do with that?

Irrelevant to the fact you got a warning.

No… GQ is more civilized. No political jabs, just for instance, which are almost de rigeur in GD.

That’s not actually true. As a matter of fact, that’s completely untrue. Atheists do not hold that religious beliefs are a sign of insanity. Many hold religious beliefs to be unreasonable, as in not based on evidence. But nearly all atheists understand that religious beliefs are personal and based on various foundations other than evidence.

I don’t think even our hardest-core atheists, on the SDMB, have said that the typical person of faith is “insane.”

I was browsing and found a fairly old post in a open thread, where the Op said “religious nut bars” and no one called him on it.

Go ahead. See how that goes.

 1. That’s not the same as saying “The typical person of faith is insane.” Some religious extremists are way beyond nucking futs. Some are so insane, they engage in terrorist activities. But no SDMB atheist has (to my knowledge) said that the ordinary rank-and-file faithful are “insane.”

 2. It’s pretty common on the SDMB to talk trash about third parties who aren’t actually present and engaged. Vladimir Putin is insane. Kim Jong Un is absolutely wacko. The mods don’t (tend to) warn off this kind of talk.

So: bad comparison, on two different grounds.

To add to your knowledge.

True enough, Bricker. But pointing out a single - now trimmed - poster’s extreme views doesn’t necessarily color the entirety of discussions about religions and their being affected by the non-religious.

I know. But it does rebut the notion that no SDMB atheist has said that the ordinary rank-and-file faithful are “insane.”

Well, noted. But we could probably find someone who said blue is red and cats are dogs if we looked.

Okay, I was wrong.

It is also wrong to say that “SDMB atheists” – as a group – refer to the religious faithful as insane. Both universal declarations are wrong.
Next, the atheists here think that no sane person believes that G-d is real.
No, “the atheists here” do not think that; you pointed to one and one only.

Hey everyone,

I am the offender who received the mod note which, I have to say, after rereading my post the other night, I do agree with tomndebb’s call. Although it wasn’t my intent to dismiss the OP, intent is not the point. I could have and should have expressed myself differently if I was going to post at all. I am usually more circumspect than I was in the referenced thread but, in this case, my post was a visceral response to the OP that really contributed nothing to the discussion other than “you’re wrong, case closed” which, yes, is threadshitting, especially in GQ.

On the other hand, first mod note. Woo-hoo!

Wanna go for a…waaaaarning?

Sure, why not? Give me the complete bad boy treatment.

Cheers to you for this. Well said.

A mod note isn’t any kind of penalty so I wouldn’t worry (or celebrate) too much anyway. (and you definitely want to answer Jonathan Chance “No. Thread closed.”

Just so you know as far as my arguments in this thread go they are more against the continued insistence of some that threadshitting is just being a straight-shooting ignorance fighter and should be allowed. Your case in hand was the only one used to argue all that over, but in itself wasn’t nearly as bad as many I’ve seen.

Almost any time someone dares to try to discuss something that in any way touches on the supernatural, religious, conspiracy theory oriented, etc. there is usually a brigade of regular threadshitters right on the scene, acting like they are duty bound as ignorance fighters to put a quick end to the thread before anyone dares enjoy themselves just talking about it.

Your post sort of fit that profile, but in this case the thread was absolutely incredible (IMO didn’t deserve a response, but the problem is when someone feels bound to post just to say so).

we got two. I’ll bet we could find more. Delusional is a term used.

I did not intend to imply that *all *“SDMB atheists” – as a group – refer to the religious faithful as insane. Just enough of them.

You know, this would actually be an interesting topic for a thread of its own.

Although I think ‘insane’ is way too strong a contention, I would be surprised if a non insignificant percent of this board’s membership did not believe theists suffer from delusion even if most won’t say it.

Would you mind defining your version of “threadshitting” because, more and more, it sounds like “Not supporting the premise and posting contrary evidence and/or cites”.
There are an uncountable number of boards out there where conspiracists and woosters and religionists can post anything they want to their heart’s content with the understanding that the moderators will protect them from any opposing views.
I hope this board never becomes one of those.

It was.. Bricker’s link went to that thread. DT was responding to the OP.
