That is, whilst falling asleep, and even for sometime after I fall asleep, my body twitches.
Drives Mrs. Spiff absolutely batty, and has caused me to be banished to the couch on many (many!) occasions.
The medical reasons for my twitchiness, and possible cures for it, are perhaps fodder for another thread.
But what I’m asking for here in this thread are opinions on the Tempur-Pedic mattresses. They are advertised as giving “undisturbed, motion-free sleep” because the “TEMPUR material absorbs motions so you don’t feel your partner’s movements … Each of you are supported independently … Your partner’s movements will never disturb you again.!”
So … I’m sure a Tempur-Pedic mattress cost more than the average mattress, but I’m willing to pay more for one if it really works as advertised.
So, are there any Dopers who have tried these mattresses? Do they work as advertised?
We tried one for a lot of the same reasons you state: I’m a restless sleeper, Mr. Athena is a light sleeper, and that makes for problems.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t determine if the Tempur-pedic truly absorbed movements because the damn thing was so uncomfortable neither of us could sleep worth a damn. They’re hard as a rock. Mr. Athena even prefers a firm matress, and he couldn’t sleep on it.
We sent it back 3 weeks into our 30 day free trial, and bought a normal mattress. Has not fixed the restless sleeper/light sleeper problem, but at least it’s comfy!
I have no idea what Athena is talking about. This is the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever owned. Far from being “hard as a rock”, you sink into comfortable bliss. Perhaps she had the low-end model.
Anyway, yes: Not only do you not feel any movement from the other person (twitching, getting up at night, etc.), but you usually wake up in the same position in which you fell asleep. The bad news is that you’ll pay about $3,000 for the plush mattress and platform (box springs void the warranty).
Actually this is the biggest complaint I’ve heard from people about the mattress. If you are someone who turns in their sleep (not necessarily restless) but likes to move from side to back to side throughout the night they are awful. Once you lay in one spot it makes an impression in the mattress. If you then move to a different position you are lying uncomfortably in your old impression until the mattress s-l-o-w-l-y reforms around you.

I used to be a restless sleeper… I’d wake up and found the covers at the end of the bed and every once in a while my head would be where my feet were. Oh, and there was snoring too. Since I got my tempur-pedic, I don’t move around as much or snore as much and I have a shorter, but more restful, sleep. I still roll around a bit, but my ex didn’t notice once I bought the mattress. He was a light sleeper and wasn’t woken by my stirrings anymore.
As for the firmness, it’s not a soft bed, it’s a thick foam bed and is temperature sensitive. If it’s too cold, the bed will be firm, too hot and it will be uncomfortable.
Anyone have experience with the mattress as a solution for pain? I get lower back pain if I stay in bed too long on my traditional mattress, and my g/f has fibromyalgia and often has great difficulty getting comfortable, so we thought a Tempurpedic might be the way to go.
Again, this is not my experience. The more you use it, the better it is.
Nonsuch: My wife has sciatica and I have problems with foot and leg cramps, but these problems have abated significantly along with morning stiffness (not that kind). It’s also an easier bed to sit up in to read or watch TV. Because your butt sinks into the foam, you don’t slide down as easily.
I love my tempurpedic. I haven’t spent the night with a restless sleeper but I am positive that it would work as advertised. Come to think of it, other than my ex-wife I may have slept with a restless sleeper and not even known it.
Once again, I am going to throw my support behind flo-beds.
A foam mattress similiar to the tempur-pedic, but you can get a different firmness for each side of the bed. Ours also has an additional memory foam topper and lumbar support topper. Even with those two common pieces of foam, I barely notice mr.stretch’s tossing and turning and then only because he tends to crowd me, too.
I love a soft bed and mr.stretch likes a firm bed; we are able to accomodate both of our sleeping styles quite nicely with our flo-bed. We also got the adjustable foundation which allows mr.stretch to make his bed even firmer when he wants.
TMI: My very soft side of the bed is for sleeping–sex is a totally different proposition. If you get a very soft foam bed, prepare to make some adjustments for other activities.
We’ve had our Tempur-Pedic for about five years. I will not consider anything else. It has the firmness that is needed for good back support and yet it has that incredible “melting-to-fit-your-body” that high quality foam gives. NASA was not wrong. I don’t wake up during the night when I sleep there.
I have much less lower back pain, but it did not totally eradicate it. I am considering getting an adjustable Tempur-Pedic (hospital style) for that reason. (I think my husband may be finding out about it here.
I don’t notice when he turns over, but I will have to do some experimenting to see if we can notice leg spasms, body jerks, etc.
Thanks for the flo-bed site, stretch. I am not anywhere near their one and only showroom in California, and I’m reluctant to spend that kind of money on a mattress that I haven’t personally tested.
I mean, I’d need to lie on it for at least 10 minutes, to see what degree of firmness works best for me and whether I need the extra lumbar support. Or even if I like the idea of a foam mattress that contours to my body at all.
And my wife would also need to test these out, to see if we need to by a “split” mattress, with a different level of firmness on each side.
The advantage so far for me is that I do have some Tempur-pedic dealers in town, and so we can try out the goods before we buy.
After my husband, echo23tc, returned from Iraq, his snoring was WAY worse than usual. Not only that, but our old mattresses were just that–old. So we went bed shopping. We knew we wanted to try tempurpedics so that’s what we did first. We didn’t buy the cheapest one, but the next one up from that. We both like firm mattresses…and LOVE our tempupedic. His snoring almost completely stopped, I only have to elbow him once a week at the most now. And we both agree that we sleep for so long in one spot now that we wake up and have to move because we’ve stiffened up–that’s age for ya! We love the new bed…wouldn’t trade it. We’re dreading visiting family now because of the uncomfortable beds!
Oh and where we bought ours (Sleep City) the trial period was 90 days, not 30. And they would come and get it if we didn’t like it. The guy who sold us ours said that he’d sold several mattresses to returning servicemembers recently. And that of all the tempurpedics he’d sold in the previous 3 years, only 3 or 4 people brought them back.
As for pain, we’ve both noticed less back pain and less stiffness. I injured a hamstring about 8 months ago and once we bought the new bed, the pain was significantly reduced. We had both been suffering from shoulder pain (side sleepers) and both of us noticed that had also gone away. As for other benefits, our circulation has improved. We only sleep with a sheet and the comforter, in the winter, the down comforter, in the summer the light one. And right now when it’s hot I’ve put a mattress pad on it to reduce the squishiness from the warmer temps and it worked great!
TMI: As noted, sex changes somwhat…it’s actually better
