Ten things that make you happy (non-political)

and of course, un-ordered lists.

  1. Flying first class
  2. Hearing waves at night
  3. Morning sex with my wife (all sex with her, actually).
  4. Good wine
  5. A good workout
  6. Mariners win a game or two
  7. Pizza
  8. Hearing my children laugh
  9. My grandson climbing into my lap to discuss things.
  10. Revenge.

In no particular order:

  1. when something makes me laugh so hard and for so long that I’m gasping for breath, my abs are cramping, and my scalp hurts. It’s like a different kind of orgasm.

  2. a fly-by of fighter jets. Football game, fourth of July, airshow, whatever.

  3. after a professional football game, when many of the players on opposing teams take the time to seek each other out for a handshake. It’s not the mandatory line-up/slog performed by junior-high kids after an amateur-grade match - these guys, on their own initiative, are going out of their way to pay their respects to each other after a brutal contest. It makes me feel good, gives me hope for civilization.

  4. the feeling I get when grilling out in the evening. A nicely shaded deck in the backyard, spiced chicken ribs on the grill, applewood chips smoldering away underneath, I’m into my second beer, and the scent from the grill wafts up…that’s a moment of pure happy.

  5. harking back to Maggie’s #3: if I want to be happy while driving, I pull up Prince’s “Kiss” on the iPod and turn the volume up to 11.

  6. shared cultural references. When you spit one out, and at least one person within earshot understands its origin and significance. Contemplate this on the Tree of Woe.

  7. spring, when you can finally go outside and be comfortable again in t-shirt, shorts, and sandals.

  8. new snow. yeah, I’ll have to shovel the driveway again, but the dirty, crusty winter world looks so much better when it’s blanketed in virgin-white snow.

  9. watching border collies do their herding thing. They are smart and passionate dogs, extremely energetic, excited about doing what they do, and it’s a pleasure watching them cooperate hand-in-glove with their handlers.

  10. the smell of sage in the desert southwest. It smells different after rain than it does when bone-dry, but both are intoxicating to me. I don’t know how much of that effect is because of links with old memories of family vacations, and how much is because it’s just a damn good smell, but there ya go.

For some reason I feel like making this before I read the other responses in this thread. Here goes:

(1) Driving in my Jeep with the doors off or top down when the weather is nice
(2) A happy hour or party when I like the company I’m in
(3) Playing with little kids
(4) Playing with my dog
(5) When my husband does cute things to make me laugh
(6) Inside jokes
(7) Riding on a jet ski (not a frequent occurrence, but it does make me happy)
(8) When a friend of mine sees something related to weight training/bodybuilding and tells me they thought of me
(9) When my makeup turns out the way I wanted it to look
(10) When I get together in person with a good friend that I haven’t seen in a while, and there’s those initial moments where we have so much we want to tell each other that we both get out of breath

Also want to mention that there are some solitary activities that I really like doing, like reading and writing and organizing stuff. But I feel like those activities are more soothing. They’re pleasant and they calm me down, but I think of happiness as a more energizing feeling.

  1. Flying
  2. People enjoying a meal I cooked
  3. Working on a film
  4. Cats
    5… Flying?
  5. Flying
  6. Flying
  7. Flying
  8. Flying
  9. Flying
  1. Climbing into bed when it’s been made with fresh sheets that have been on the line all day in the summer breeze.
  2. The first snowfall of winter. It’s so pretty, and it usually doesn’t last long so you don’t have the shoveling hanging over your head - YET.
  3. Crispy, frosty air in the autumn and the bright colored leaves against a cloudy sky.
  4. The smell of fresh bread out of the oven.
  5. Sitting on the patio on summer nights and listening to the crickets.
  6. Opening the tumbler barrels and rinsing the rocks off to see how well they’ve turned out after final polish.
  7. When my youngest cat Nicky jumps up on me and asks for pets - it’s been a long haul getting him “tame” so it feels like an accomplishment when he asks for pets.
  8. Handing out treats and small party favor things at work to everyone on all the holidays I can find - it always amazes me how little it takes to make people smile.
  9. Fresh tomatoes from the garden.
  10. Walking in the rain.
  1. Hearing a song I love on my car radio. I don’t know why it’s better when it comes on randomly rather than “I want to hear this song so I’m queueing it up on my stereo,” but it is.
  2. Puppies, particularly puppies wrestling with each other.
  3. Mocha frappucino on a hot day.
  4. A hot day.
  5. Jet Skis. Whoever said money can’t buy happines has never seen anyone playing on jet skis.
  6. Snowcapped mountains in the distance.
  7. Blooming sunflowers and ox-eye daisies.
  8. My dog (a former puppy, so could be included in #2) always makes me happy.
  9. Dancing.
  10. Finding $5 in the pocket of something I haven’t worn in awhile.

Your #5 is one of my favorite things! It’s such a great feeling.

This thread made my day! I thought I had 10 things to list but as I read everyone’s posts I found more and more things that I would have to add to my list! I guess what I’m saying is, that even though some days are pretty crappy we all have a lot of happy things in our lives.

  1. Thinking about how young the universe is and how eventually even a trillion years will be a rounding error.

  2. Meaningful time with nieces and nephews.

  3. A good stand up comedy special. Doug Stanhope, Louis CK, Bill burr, George Carlin, Patton Oswalt, etc.

  4. Going hiking and reminiscing in my old college town.

  5. A cold shower after working outside in summer.

  6. Fireball whiskey or old crow and a good movie after work.

  7. Fall is coming up. That means nice weather, beautiful scenery, vacations from work and back to back holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas).

  8. I have millions of songs, movies and TV shows at my fingertips anytime I want them.

  9. Memories of all the good times I’ve spent with good people. Too many to isolate just one.

  10. Having so much food to pick from. All the meals I’ve eaten, restaurants I’ve been to, dishes I’ve tried. And I’ve barely scratched the surface. Yet another benefit of living in a large city, all the food.

  11. (because fuck it, my list goes to 11). Campfires.

In no specific order:

  1. Smoking a cigar and having a glass of fine whiskey or tequila with my dad while arguing about politics.
  2. Sitting outside on my deck when it’s a bit chilly and I have a good fire going in my kiva.
  3. Waking up with my wife and my small dogs nestled up against me and I don’t have to jump out of bed and go to work.
  4. Rain…I love it when it rains at my house and the temperature drops and the air is fresh and clean and smells so good.
  5. Hanging out with my youngest kids, especially since I know the time for this is rapidly coming to an end as they get ready to graduate and become adults.
  6. Gaming. I love playing the games I love and am excited when new games are in development in the types I really like.
  7. Cruises. I love going on cruises or long vacations either in the country or to other countries.
  8. Watching my two small dogs wrestle around or try and steal the steak bone I just gave them from each other.
  9. Listening to a good audiobook on a long car trip. I love to drive, I love to listen to books, so both together make me really happy.
  10. Giving my 2 cents worth of opinion (and a bargain at double the price!) here on this board, even though I now that folks rarely read what I write. I just love to argue and often will argue a position just to see the rebuttals, which are more interesting to me.
