No, not even close. It’s not an internet meme, it’s a riddle, and it’s usually botched in the telling. Cecil wrote about it in 1988, and he was tired of dealing with it even then.

It was good stuff and fun reading. Heady times, I haven’t forgotten.
lno wrote that Pit thread about the white-hot fire of a thousand suns. I don’t remember what it was about, but it was hilarious.
This thread made me laugh to tears while it was going on. I posted under another name back then, but it’s the reason I’m a Dope lifer.
I just reread the TMI thread for the first time in who knows how many years. Man, did that bring back memories - not really for the stories, but for all the great personalities that are gone now.

BTW back in 2000 aha posted this thread; he was in the band that recorded Western Union and a few other hits in the 1960s.
While looking for that thread I found the Are You Famous thread, from 2004, in post 20 of which can be found the line,
“I’ve been to the Marianas trench. Just once. In 1960. For 20 minutes.”
I looked and didn’t see an answer to this, so sorry if I missed it. The Lost Weekend was a time when the board went down for a few days for some sort of maintenance, like moving to new servers, or something of that kind. The administration made it known that posts submitted during the interval would be lost forever, and more or less proclaimed a state of anarchy.
I remember one or two threads in which hatreds that had long simmered silently exploded forth in full view, but decorum prohibits my mentioning any names, except to say that I wasn’t part of it.

Didn’t he first get Ed to welcome him, or maybe Manny, or maybe I’m misremembering it.
The one that was my favorite was where he directly appealed to Cecil, sort of humble and bold at once. People started laying bets about whether he would get his welcome or perhaps get smited instead.
