Tenacious D

Now its time to introduce young Nastyman, arch rival and nemesis to Wonderboy, with powers comparable to Wonderboy!
So anyway I was thinking of getting the Tenacious D album but I’ve only heard ‘Tribute’ and the aformentioned ‘Wonderboy’. I was wondering if anyone here has it and considers it a good album. I’ve heard its funny but I don’t just want to laugh when I listen to it. I want to know if its a good rock album.

Also, more to the point, will it suit my tastes? Bands I like include Pearl Jam, U2, Metallica, Live and silverchair. And lately, Radiohead.

I think the singles + F*** Her Gently (surely the next single) are by far the best tracks; but then I only listened to it on the listening station in the shop.

I own it and while it’s more of a comedy album than anything else, it has good music in addition to hilarious lyrics. I believe Dave Grohl plays drums on a few of the tracks actually.

I consider Jack Black to be the Chris Farley of the song world. What makes him funny isn’t necessarily the script but the energy he puts into trying to make it funny. The problem is that energy can only carry you so far. You need something that truly is funny to keep listening and when half his songs don’t even elicit a chuckle from me the first time, it’s going to be difficult to overcome.
Other songs are pretty good but haven’t held up on repeated listening.

Just get whatever Radiohead albums you don’t have and listen to those instead.

Tenacious D do rock live. They rock until the wheels fall off. I can’t really see myself listening to an actual album of theirs more than once or twice, however.

Pretty much the ones listed are the best ones. I downloaded a bunch of their stuff and as I have a burner I just chose the ones I liked best. Most of them I can’t really listen to more than a couple of times.

Someone gave me the Tenacious D album for my birthday. Its a steaming pile IMHO. but hey its the thought that counts.

I’ll dissent and say that the album has held up extremely well for me, mainly because the songs are actually good as well as funny. Great to sing along to, too. And the skits between songs are for the most part short enough that you won’t have to skip 'em to get to the good stuff.

First of all, one has to “get it” to truly understand the humor of this CD. Yes, in the abstract, this is a funny CD. Jack Black says a lot of funny words and curses a lot, but there’s much more to “The D” than just dirty words.

If you’re a musician and you played during the 80’s, you’ll “get” what Tenacious D are all about. There are a lot of musical jokes going on that the average listener/non-musician might not get. All the cliches are there. All the generic/stereotypical/overused guitar riffs, chord changes, bass lines and drum parts are all there. Everything that we all thought was so cool back then (that we all think is so lame now), is all on this CD. I laughed out loud about things that my non-musician friends just couldn’t understand. There’s very much of an “inside joke” thing going on.

All the overly dramatic, satanic or cheesy “mystical” lyrics are there as well. From “fighting a mythical Hydra with a broadsword” to “life on the road” are all covered. Ronnie James Dio and Bob Seger would be proud!

Of course, the other big joke you have to “get” is that “The D” are way-to-cool, Black Magic rock Gods from the Underworld. No one rocks like “The D!” Satan himself must bow down and pay homage to “The D!”

But besides all of that, Jack Black can actually sing! He’s got a great rock voice. Musical cliches aside, the musicianship on this CD is pretty damn good. The guys can play and there are a lot of catchy hooks. I’ve caught myself singing “Wonder Boy” on more than a few occasions.

Yes, this is a funny CD and the songs are pretty good, but if you’re a musician from the 80’s, then you’ll truly understand what this CD is all about.

Maybe I’ll have to actually go and buy the CD. I just DLed random songs so I probably don’t even have most of the CD. I think I’ll do that.

I looked at the track listing, and well, it’s as follows for those who don’t know: 1. Kielbasa 2. One Note Song 3. Tribute 4. Wonderboy 5. Hard Fing 6. Fk Her Gently 7. Explosivo 8. Dio 9. Inward Singing 10. Kyle Quit 11. The Road 12. C*k Pushups 13. Lee 14. Friendship Test 15. Friendship 16. Karate Schnitzel 17. Karate 18. Rock Your Socks 19. Drive Thru 20. Double Team 21. City Hall
I’ve only heard “One Note Song” and “Wonderboy” from this album, but I have heard some other songs that I’d recommend that still make me giggle, like “Bowie” and “I’m the Only Gay Eskimo,” which is one of my favorite comedic songs in general.
“These cold winter nights are taking their toll
I even get excited when I see the north pole
See the north pole”

‘Tribute’ and ‘Wonderboy’ are both really good songs. It’s one of the few albums where the big singles are the best songs, in my opinion.

‘Kielbasa’ is one of my favorite songs on the album, it’s got a great hook to it, even if the lyrics are mind-numbingly idiotic.

‘Fuck Her Gently’ is the first Tenacious D song I heard. I have it memorized, and sometimes I hear it in my head at inopportune moments (especially when I start singing along withoug realizing I’m singing out loud).

‘Explosivo’ is another one of their really catchy songs with idiotic lyrics.

‘Dio’ is just silly, heh heh. ‘And a smaller one for K.G.’

‘Kyle Quit the Band’ is OK, I won’t skip past it like I will ‘The Road’, which is just too much for me.

‘Karate’ is good.

‘City Hall’ is embarassing to listen to, it’s like a really bad episode of ‘Three’s Company’.

I bought it when I’d only heard Wonderboy which I thought was great. Having heard Wonderboy enough times I gave it away, the rest didn’t stand up to repeat listening once the joke wore thin.
