Definitely! The shear number of young adults that will be able to vote in the next elections who showed up at the various rallies and protests was very heartening to see. Both of the men that were expelled are going to be great leaders for the next generation. And I can’t wait to see it.
The county commissions should appoint the spouses or other close family of the reps, Lurleen Wallace style. Then have the actual reps relected.
The legislature won’t be able to move against the spouses for the sins of others, but it will be clear that there is a continuity of ideology. And once they’ve been formally reelected, they are more secure.
In Jones’ case, I know he isnt married. I’m not sure about any other family members he has in the area. All I know is that whoever they put in temporarily, I will be voting for Jones to represent me.
They’re not stopping there. Memphis could lose project funding if Pearson is reinstated.
FOX13 also learned that Memphis could lose funding for some major projects if Pearson is re-appointed. According to Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon, leaders in Nashville threatened to withhold millions of dollars in state funding for projects in the Memphis area if commissioners were to reappoint Pearson.
A majority of the Nashville council are supporting the reinstatement of Pearson.
So they’re going after Memphis in similar ways that they’ve been going after Nashville. They’ve really gotten even more on a power trip. I’ll honestly admit, it worries me more everyday to see how damaging my state is becoming.
And there are some people who don’t think that the media should report about school shootings. They make excuses like it is the cause of school shootings, but the reality is that they just don’t want the public to know about it.
If you can’t solve school shootings, the next best thing is to pretend that you have.
Think how similar this is to DeSantis’ fit over Disney.
“You fought back! No fairsies! I’m gonna tell my momma and we’ll hurt you, you meanies!”
This expulsion is just an example of what we’ll probably continue to see in the future, as the GOP radicalizes at the state & local level. In states where they have a super-majority of anything, you will see this type of “government”.
It does lead me to wonder what the Democrats have to do to be more competitive in red states. We might not flip them blue. But our ability to press for policy concerns at the state & local levels is demolished when we lose a state to a GOP super majority. So, we at least need to make it harder for them to cobble together ridiculous show-trials like this expulsion, as well as laws that are put together by ALEC to be fast-tracked through all these red state legislatures.
One of the criticisms that I’ve seen of Obama in particular, and more generally of the national Democratic party bigwigs, is that they didn’t really think the state elections were that important so didn’t work hard at building/maintaining/funding the state election apparatus.
Several gerrymanders and super-majorities later, I hope they might finally start to understand.
The Wisconsin judgeship election that happened this week put a liberal judge on the bench, giving them a 4-3 majority. With this new majority they are expected to shred the Republican legislature’s grossly gerrymandered maps. Whether they can succeed before the 2024 election is doubtful, but the case will certainly be brought this year.
Except the Republicans in the Wisconsin legislature are already talking about impeaching her.
Really? Wow. This is what I’m talking about. You get a supermajority in a state legislature, and you can launch your own “laboratory of authoritarianism”…I hope what you’re saying doesn’t pan out, because Wisconsin is actually a majority Democratic-voting state.
Impeaching her for what, exactly?
For being a Democrat, of course. Did you think they needed any other reason?
They’ll probably come up with some excuse – ‘She expressed an opinion on an issue likely to come before the court! and she’s refusing to recuse herself from any and all cases related in any way to that issue!’ – but yes, that’s about what it amounts to.
I really hope it doesn’t work. But all too many of the Republicans have given up any attempt to act as if they believe in democracy. They believe only in their being in power. Which, of course, massively endangers the country.
I’m willing to bet that you don’t know sweet fuck all about these folks outside of this story, and it’s a pretty bad look to imply that they haven’t done the honest, hard work.
Justin Jones has been appointed interim representative for District 52.
This was pretty much what was expected, but I’m still glad to hear about it. Now when the special election comes up, we’ll most likely be voting him back on a permanent basis.
Justin jones was unanimously reappointed to his seat.
On to Mr Pearson.
Great news. Now we wait and see if the Republicans pull funding for Nashville, as they threatened.
They’ve been threatening to do that for ages. They’re already taking as much action against us as they can - they’ve slashed our Council (though a judge did place a temporary injunction on that one), they’re threatening to take over our stadiums and airport because we obviously don’t have any interest in having tourism here (read: we didn’t want the RNC here). They overrode everything we wanted to do during COVID from mask mandates to virtual schooling. Nashville being one of the few spots of blue among the red, they’ve been trying to break us for awhile. But we’re not going to break. We’re made of sterner stuff than they are of petty.
