Teri Garr RIP

Never saw that before. As a kid, I was a HUGE fan of Steve Martin. But now I see something like that and ask, what is funny about it?

And Mr. Mom, one of my personal favorites.

Fresh Air tonight had a rebroadcast of an interview with Garr from 2005. She sounded quite awesome.

Teri was one of my very first crushes. I always adored her, and she excelled at playing funny, slightly exasperated characters.

When Friends first premiered, I thought to myself, “Lisa Kudrow reminds me more than a little of Teri Garr”…and when they cast Teri as Phoebe’s biological mother, later in the series, it was perfect.

Rest well, dear Teri.

I remember 20-odd years ago I came across a promo for the spin-off series from “Assignment Earth,” her episode of Star Trek, but I was never able to determine if it was legit. The series, if it ever got to the pre-production stage, would have been called The Lincoln Logs, after her character Roberta Lincoln.

Anybody else see this, or was it a work of pure fiction?

I’ve never heard of it, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. That said, “The Lincoln Logs” sounds a bit too cutesy and punny for one of Rodenberry’s titles.

FWIW, “Lincoln Enterprises” was a company that Roddenberry was involved in, which sold Trek memorabilia and merchandise, as far back as 1967. The name apparently came from Roddenberry’s admiration of Abraham Lincoln (Garr’s character might have had that surname for the same reason).

She had a supporting role as Alex’s widowed mother in The Black Stallion.

Yeah, I had always heard (or perhaps just assumed) that if the spin-off had been made, it would have been called “Assignment: Earth.”

In a nice confluence of events, we were doing our weekly watching of old episodes of Dr. Kildare last night and at the start of the first part Kildare is checking two patients. The first is Teri Garr in an uncredited role and not seen in the rest of the episode. It’s from 1965.
