Does anyone know or know how to discover when the term Emotional Baggage was coined? A quick google search didn’t turn anything up in the first 30 or so matches on the searches I attempted.
I’m curious about this too, since I’d guess it has a 20th century origin. But: the word “baggage” has been used to mean an encumbrance since (quoth the OED) at least the early 17th century, in which Bacon refers to “the Baggage of Vertue.”
Peep, thanks for the information on baggage… and I do think that encumberance is a good meaning, especially in this context… emotional encumberance holds about the same meaning for me as emotional baggage, just without the pretty luggage metaphor
