"Terriers" Question (spoilers likely -- hoped for)

I’ll spoiler this for folks who watch this on encore later in the week. It’s just a WAG, but it’s based on tonight’s ep.

Well, I thought the “Jason/Gretchen” plot line was going somewhere, so after tonight’s episode and the previews for next week, I can easily see Hank hitting the sobriety skids, and doing something like burning down his new house (as a sort of burning his divorce in effigy) and torching the rest of the bonds from the Lindus job.

Since Britt just proposed to Katie, and might be looking forward to using some of that money (his half!) someday…

Then again, Hank did just take a bullet for Katie last week, so maybe Gustafson’s warnings weren’t foreshadowing, but red herring…

Man, this is the second time this show has had me in tears. That’s not supposed to happen with cop shows.

I can’t decide how I feel about Jason. I watch via Amazon and they don’t show previews, dammit.

But about Jason – it was assholish of him to let Hank think Gretchen didn’t know. She won’t listen to anything he says about Jason now. But in Jason’s favor, he knew that Hank would keep watching out for Gretchen, so this was one way to get Hank out of their lives. Gretchen should have been more understanding, but I get why she wasn’t.

My first thought on seeing the thread title, too.

At first blush, I wasn’t completely thrilled about a having a we-don’t-know-who-the-daddy-is storyline. It’s such a wretched daytime soap staple. But the people in charge of this show have done such a great job about avoiding cliches and obvious payoffs that I guess I should trust them to handle this in a similarly intelligent fashion.

The actor who played Michaela/Michael knocked my socks right off. D. J. Pierce, per IMdB. First acting credit. I hope we see him again.

Can anyone explain the origin/meaning/significance of the title of this series?

I read somewhere that the title relates to terrier dogs and how they like to dig and burrow. They’re scruffy and determined, feisty and lovable.

I will jump in at this point to say that I really, really hope this show gets renewed. It’s just… not like anything else being done right now (provided the crazy sister continues.)

I listened to an interview with one of the creators, and he said it was supposed to be a temporary title, which nobody was really happy with as it was potentially misleading and left field. But it never got changed, and so there it is. Its enigmaticness* may even have contributed to its low ratings.

*I don’t think that’s a word, but bugger me if I can think of what ought to be there in its place

I think it’s the perfect title, I knew what it meant from the beginning… as a matter of fact the title was enigmatically entreating and attractive outside of an Animal Planet Context. No need for every title to be literal. I can’t think of a better title since its run… “Dolworth and Pollack, PI’s” just doesn’t quite say it. They need to feature a cameo with Magnum P.I. (Tom Selleck) in the next season…

This is my understanding. Plus, in one of the early episodes the guys are talking about their business cards and what their logo should be, and they talk about wanting something that shows determination, loyalty, etc. No one ever says “dog” let alone “Terrier,” but that explained the title of the show to me.

I wish Gustafson would lose that stupid cigar tip already.

This week’s episode was quite intense. Love the Geek Squad.

Sepinwall says the ratings are up a little bit, but that it’s still in cancellation territory.

I really hope FX gives the show a chance. It’s easily the best new show this year. I think it’s also the best FX show for new viewers to pick up. With most FX shows, you miss a few episodes and you’re lost for good. Terriers is episodic enough that you can come in at pretty much any episode. I never even saw the first episode but I figured out the story pretty quickly.

Also, I hope Hank doesn’t fall off the wagon. It seems to be pretty much the standard in TV that if a character is a recovering alcoholic, eventually they will relapse. But Terriers has been pretty good so far at avoiding the normal cliches.

Sepinwall is worried – link. There’s an e-mail address for FX in the article and he’s encouraging viewers to use it.

Only half a million viewers? That’s a damn shame.

Best episode yet.

The wipes (?) during the time jumps were beautiful.

Poor Britt. His peeps love him, if he could just let it out and let it go.

And Hank and Gus are healing the rift between them. Now if only Hank can get that kind of closure with Gretchen.

I sent my e-mail tonight. No doubt my impassioned plea, my perfectly chosen words, my sheer force of personality will be enough to guarantee a second season. Rest easy, fellow fans. All is well.

OK, OK, fine … it’s just one more drop in the bucket. But I have never bothered to take part in a save-my-favorite-television-show campaign before, if memory serves. I’d really like to think the show has a special quality about it that will motivate other people who don’t normally get involved in a campaign like this to do so.

Hank loves him. Katie cheated on him.

She’s got issues; when she confessed to Hank what she did, she pretty much admitted that she did it because she didn’t feel she deserved to be happy, or have a guy like Britt. There’s a backstory there, that may not come out this season (or ever, if there’s no 2nd season).

Her betrayal had more to do with punishing herself than hurting Britt.

Can I just say that I love the fact that Britt took the dog? Any other show would have him say “you can keep the dog” after she broke down or maybe end the episode with the dog back at her place.
