december, I want to address your point about “disunity.”
I think it’s equally probably that “disunity” in the U.S. helps us when it comes to middle eastern nutcases.
Let’s turn it around and think about an different example from our end as Americans. Say a country really pisses you off (how about France, for not supporting us in the Iraq efforts). How would you feel about the country of France if 100% of the French populace and leadership put on the same game face and all insisted the U.S was dead wrong? Pretty hostile, hey? Now how would you feel about the country if you knew that some people in France (including some in the government) expressed some dissent? In your shoes, I’d feel considerably less hostile towards France if I knew there were some people within its borders who didn’t buy into the official stance.
I can’t say for sure that it softens our enemies’ loathing to know that some Americans disagree with the same U.S. policies they object to. But it’s certainly a possibility.

It’s one thing to viciously insult me even wishing for my death. That’s probably the best you can do, since you lack sound arguments. But, it’s another thing to viciously insult me by apparently alluding to my Jewish heritage, and even hinting that the Holocaust might have had some justification. I don’t want to believe you guys are anti-semites, but you’re giving a good imitation.

Avenger, you assert that Sheik Nasrallah didn’t claim that a Democratic victory would lead to American troops being withdrawn from Iraq. However, the quote merely shows that he didn’t promise that outcome within a year. I think Nasrallah’s implication is that he did expect that Bush’s electoral defeat to lead eventually to a withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. However, I grant you that the article didn’t explicitly say that.
Here we have a textbook perfect example of the way december’s mind, or at least what passes for it, works. So unable is he to admit the slightest possibility that his views could be in any way wrong, he assumes that a comparison between his views and those of Nazi Germany must be a de facto endorsement of Nazism. Because his views can’t possibly be anything other than 100% correct, saying his views are like those of the Nazis must be saying that the Nazis, too, are 100% correct.

No such thing was said and your attempt to twist it is absurd. The point made (correctly or not) was that your personality is the sort that made the Holocaust possible, accepting as true every bit of administration propaganda and claiming that all who voice opposition are giving comfort to the enemy. There is nothing in that to claim that the Holocaust was justified.
It was striking for them to bring the Holocaust into the discussion if all they wanted to do was insult me personally. ISTM that if they believe that my words would justify genocide against the Jews, they may be implying that some other Jews were justifiably slaughtered as well.
Clarence Thomas has been harshly vilified over the years. Fortunately nobody has he is the kind of person who made lynching possible. Anyone who did say that would be branded as a racist, and justifiably so.
He didn’t say your words justified killing Jews. He said that, if you’d been a gentile in Nazi Germany, you’d have been the sort of person who’d keep his head down and not question authority while said authority was murdering millions of innocent people.
And you continue to deliberately distort what was said. No one justified the Holocaust. He said that your personality was the sort that permitted it.

You’ll have to ask Coll. I am not about to pursue an investigation into december’s personality or motives. I simply would prefer that he not twist and distort every reference to which he alludes into an unrecognizable strawman. His dishonesty in this sort of exchange is simply too blatant to be left unchallenged.
Whatever Coll said should not (in my opinion) have been reported here. Since it was, december can either ignore it or refute it. (I think any refutation should have been taken back to Coll’s Live Journal, but either refuting or ignoring, either here or there, would have evoked no response from me.)
Instead, he has simply lied about what Coll said. If december chooses to engage off-board commentary, which is his prerogative, then he should have the decency to do it honestly.
