I saw a thread on the Model 3 but not the Model Y, so here we go.
I watched quite a bit of the unveil, button live so I could skip most of it and just watch bits here and there.
I hadn’t even heard of this car, so this unveil was a surprise to me. Is it a surprise to everyone? is that why no prior thread?
I found charts and numbers at wired.com: Stacking Tesla’s Model Y Against Its Electric SUV Competition
In the unveil video, Mr. Musk claims a 300 mile range. Very fast acceleration. Glass roof is a huge plus. Seems like lots of room. Priced from $39k-60K. Seats 7.
Looks great too, IMO.
I had posted a few details to the Model 3 thread, but a new thread is welcome–that one was getting unwieldy.
It very much looks like a bigger Model 3, which isn’t a bad thing at all–it means the production process should go much more smoothly this time around.
I’m still super-happy with my Model 3. The glass roof is great, and not hot even in California summers (it’s heavily tinted and has an infrared-reflective coating). The central display is easy to get used to. It’s fast and drives well. All of that should stay the same with the Y.
The new Supercharger V3 network is coming online. By the time the Model Y ships, there should be V3 stations all over the place. The big deal about the new stations is that on the Model 3 (and Y), it charges at up to 250 kilowatts. That’s equivalent to adding 17 miles of range per minute at the charger. It won’t sustain that for the whole charge, but you can expect around 200 miles of range in about 15 minutes.
Of course, with EVs, most of the charging is done at home. I think I’ve spent less than an hour total at public chargers in the past year. Most of the time, I charge overnight in my garage.
There are a number of Tesla owners here at the Dope, so if you have questions about general Tesla ownership, don’t hesitate to ask.
