Say, how did Arnold Winkelried edit his post fifty-eight minutes before he posted it?

Just curious.

Some sort of clock glitch in here somewhere, I saw something similar a few days ago.

Lemme show this to the tech guys again. Not a big deal, just weird.

I have a hunch on this one.

When one edits a post, one’s machine retrieves it and the software automatically adds in the “[edited by ___ on ___ at : _M]” line. I think that’s in the local do-the-typing-and-post-it functionality, not in the plug-it-into-the-database server end of things.

This would indicate that Arnold posted at a date supplied by the Reader, then edited a few minutes later in a different time zone, and his local computer supplied the date and time for the “edited by” line.

Could be wrong on this, but that’s my guess.

I think the hunch is right, it has something to do with the 2-hour time difference between my location and the location for the server of the SDMB. (See the «Time offset:» field in your profile).

ok i need to know how to do all the cute faces…the only one’s i know are  &

HA! I figured out two more…

The timestamp on the post is set by your timezone preferences, but the stamp on the edit is unaffected by your preferences. I see Noodles’ post as 12:49 AM, and the edit as 1:51 AM. Since I’m in Montana (Mountain time), the post would be 1:49 Central time, and the edit two minutes later. A person in the eastern timezone would still see the edit as being 1:51 (Central time), while the post would be 2:49 (Eastern time), appearing to be 58 minutes later. Noodles’ time zone isn’t relevant at all, except in so far as he sees his own post (which appears to him to have been edited over two hours after he made it).

Why try to use scientific mumbojumbo when Occams Razor says to accept the obvious simple explanation. Time travel.

What Chronos said, not what I said.
