That obvs didn’t work! I was outsmarting myself, clearly the board inserts all that formatting code on its own and all I need to do is provide the raw url. Cheers!
Some of that crap is done by some browsers, not the board. Phones are the worst at trying to “help” you be smart by them being stupid.

IOW, that same trick works with any bbcode or html. 
Discourse’s 5-character minimum is input characters, not visible ones.

There is a thread devoted to reporting this particular known board glitch that probably came from a recent Discourse update. It occasionally works and mostly doesn’t work for some impenetrable software glitchy reason. We’re not going to discover a magic cheat that reliably works until they fix it to work normally for everyone every time.
TPTB will tell us when it’s fixed.
