Test thread — to test things out. Do not lock!

Hi guys.

I’m trying to quote a post that has an imbedded picture in it, not a YT video. I get the “you cannot imbed” error. I tried hiding the preview. No dice. I tried adding the &1 but I don’t know where to put it.

Here is the post I want to quote. I am breaking the imbedded photo by putting a space between the ! and the vertical line on the left. (How do you type that?)

It might be the type of link to the image used there, in that it’s a .webp rather than a .jpg or similar. My bad if that’s the issue.

Three things.

Those weird urls that start with !| are Discourse’s way of referring to the cached thumbnail it created when the original link to external content was posted. If you delete all that and the parens so you just have the part that starts with “http” and ends with “.webp”, then your post with the quote and link will successfully save.

The general way quotes containing images work is that sometimes you’ll get the actual image displayed in-line. But far more often, as in “nearly always”, the image won’t display. Instead there will just be a plain clickable url that will take you to the image. There’s no workaround for this that I have found.

@Gyrate is right that .webp images tend to have more problems than .jpg, .png, or .gif. Sometimes they work, as it did in the post you’re trying to quote. Far more often they won’t work, either directly in a post or in a quote of a post. Instead of displaying the graphic inline, you just get the clickable link.

Bottom line: quotes of posts that include images can be made to work as links, but generally cannot be made to display the image inline as it appeared in the post being quoted.

Testing a test of a test. Or kinda.

Another “Threat” ?!

I fixed my typo while you were typing! But yes, thread was previously “threat”

Thanks for the info! (I’ve been on vacation and I’m just getting back to this.)

This is just to test my ability to write my post in a word processor and then copy and past into a new thread on the Straight Dope.

I’m looking for several things, shouldn’t be too complicated. First of all, will paragraph breaks remain?

Can I do Format Changes on the fly? How about Italics and Underlining?

Can I include a hyperlink, like www.google.com ?

How about if I edit a hyperlink? Google

Oooh, looks like doing that removes one random letter from your text… :winking_face_with_tongue:

How about font size?

How about font size?

Apparently I can’t Italisize and Underline together, but

Can I just underline?

You’re going to find a very mixed bag coming from Word (or any word processor) because Discourse uses four different and overlapping text formatting systems. Your word processor knows how to export a cut and paste in one of those formats. Which will support some formatting features, but not every formatting feature.

Discourse supports a safe subset of HTML. Like whatever for superscriptwhatever.

Discourse supports a subset of BBCode. Like [u]whatever[/u] for underlined whatever.

Discourse supports a subset of Markdown. Like **bold** for bold or ## Headline for

Headline

Discourse supports subset of LaTex which is intended mostly for math formulas, but can be pressed into service to generate colors and fonts and boxes and such:
x=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^{2}-4ac}}{2a} becomes
x=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^{2}-4ac}}{2a}

and
\begin{aligned} &\bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt F} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt A} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt R} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt T} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt S} \end{aligned}
becomes
\begin{aligned} &\bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt F} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt A} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt R} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt T} \bbox[lime,5px,border:1px solid black]{\texttt S} \end{aligned}

No one of those four formatting systems can express all the formatting possibilities available. And even all four together don’t approach the full range of what your word processor supports.

Interesting. I’ll try these…

All of this post is pasted in from Google Docs from my phone (A pasted post? A posted paste?).

Result: none of the Google Docs formatting / font color / justification was able to be pasted in. Only the bulleted list.

I’d also expect a much less complete result from working on a phone versus a Mac or PC. Which is not of much use for the increasing number of people who use a phone as their primary SDMB device.

Which is me.

Imgur has recently changed. I used to be able to get the JPEG file link directly, with the fully-qualified JPEG file path and name and .jpeg file extension. But not any more. Or maybe the way to do it has changed, but I haven’t been able to figure that out.

I’ve done it many many times before. Recently for these photos —

and

Those photos are in these posts in the cars thread —
What's the most interesting car you saw today? - #7378 by Bullitt
What's the most interesting car you saw today? - #7366 by Bullitt

But now, imgur gives me the ‘gallery link’ without the .jpeg file extension.

Examples here —

I’m bummed! Does anyone know how to do it now? I’ve tried searching, but no joy.

This is a direct link to the first image shown in your second link to your album of Indian motorcycles.

And this is the whole-bike pic from the same album:

Are these the result you wanted?

Yeah, what I do is open the gallery picture, then right click it and choose Open Image in New Tab, then the url from that new tab is just the bare image file link.

Like this:

Yes! How did you get those?
