I use my iPhone. Previously it was a long purse on a photo within an album, then Copy Link from the context menu. That gave me the jpeg file. But that no longer works.
Try to Open Image in New Tab, if that’s an option from the long press menu.
That works fine on a browser on a PC. So the issue is not something imgur changed, but rather a feature in your browser.
I do not know which browsers are available for an iPhone, but you might find a different one still has the [copy link] choice in the context menu. If there’s a [share] choice in the context menu you might find that [copy link] is a choice within whatever pop-up the [share] choice triggers.
@EllisDee’s method certainly works, just with a couple extra steps you’d hope to be able to avoid.
I realize I didn’t tell you guys… I’m using the imgur app on my iPhone. Not browser. So something changed in how the app works. I looked at every menu option and tried the obvious ones and not-so-obvious ones, but still no joy. Even opening in Safari, and in Chrome, doesn’t work.
What does “doesn’t work” mean?
- That when you try to open in those apps, they redirect to the imgur app?
Or - Do you mean that the context menu in the Safari or Chrome browser that normally has a [copy image link] in the context menu on other sites does not when they’re looking at an imgur album page?
I mean that the context menu in both Safari and Chrome has a copy link option but it does not provide the jpeg file URL. Instead, for Chrome it gives me this, \https://i.imgur.com/GtkoPFv_d.webp?maxwidth=1520&fidelity=grand, without the back slash.
Oh but hey, that does work! It doesn’t have the jpeg file extension at the end of the URL, but it works.
Webp is just a different image format. One that’s not widely used or supported yet.
I’d suggest that if you post one of those links, strip off the ? and all the BS after that.
Yeah I do that for other URL strings too. Thanks. I read past the .webp when looking at the URL, and wasn’t aware that it was another picture file type.
Here it is again, stripped from the ? to the end.
I’m on my Andriod phone using Chrome now, but as I see it the trimmed url version is barely a thumbnail about half my screen width.
Whereas your earlier post with the untrimmed url has the pic extending well off the right side of my screen. It isn’t scrollable left / right either.
And in both cases clicking the pic brings up an error page at imgur. Clearly they don’t like hotlinking, but not quite enough to make it flat impossible.
Damned if you do and …
Both yours and mine open up pictures fine when you click them. (They are also jpegs, not webps.)
That is what I see too, on iPhone using Safari browser.
Well that sucks. On my phone the picture nicely fills the width of my screen. It looks great. Even when turned 90° to landscape the picture fills the screen with well.
I keep my phone’s screen rotation fixed 99% of the time so that it’s in portrait orientation, not landscape.
I’m home now.
On my phone in landscape mode, the untrimmed URL is just the width to fit inside the SDMB page with no clipping or scrolling . But I bet that’s just a coincidence versus the fixed width contained in the “maxwidth=1520” part of that url. If you stuffed a different number in there I bet you’d get a different size image.
On my phone in landscape mode the trimmed url is still just a thumbnail. But now since the screen / window is ~2x as wide, the thumbnail looks even smaller, not even 1/4th the width it could be.
On my Win10 tablet PC with Edge I get effectively the same results as the phone. Both the trimmed and untrimmed urls deliver a fixed size image that fits awkwardly whether the tablet is portrait or landscape and regardless of how I resize the browser window.
Although I suspect most of that behavior is true of any/every image from any/every source. We’re just analyzing the crap outta this one right now. And for the many of us who use SDMB predominantly on a large screen with a wide enough window to not crowd the Discourse chrome, the typical images sizes from whatever source seem to fill the post’s textbox width plenty good enough.
Here’s what it (the webp with the stuff after the ? stripped out) looks like on my computer running Firefox on Windows 10. It’s pretty darn tiny. Both yours and mine (the jpegs) are big.
Test post
Hello again.
Well I figured out that I can post a picture if I download to Reddit lol.
There is a subreddit devoted to just such a thing.
To close this out, the way to do it has changed. I figured it out.
Again this is in the imgur app on an iPhone.
Old way (no longer works):
- Select an imgur post and scroll to the picture you want.
- Long press on the picture. A context menu appears.
- From the context menu, select the option to Copy Link.
- The fully-qualified URL with the .jpeg file extension is copied to the clipboard.
New way:
- Select an imgur post and scroll to the picture you want.
- Short press (and release) to select the picture. The picture is selected and appears by itself (other pictures in the post are no longer visible).
- At the bottom of the screen press the right arrow “share” icon. A context menu appears.
- From the context menu, select the option to Copy Link.
- The fully-qualified URL with the .jpeg file extension is copied to the clipboard.
Example follows. Here is an imgur post:
If I try the old way, this URL gets copied to the clipboard:
Here is the resulting image of that URL, pasted:
If I try the new way, this URL gets copied to the clipboard:
Here is the resulting image of that URL, pasted:
And this is exactly what I wanted. Mystery solved!
How did it rotate the view?!?!
Oh maybe the first photo is the “album cover” and the second is the actual picture you wanted to post?
Yes that’s it.
