On reddit you can force single line spacing by adding two spaces to the end of the line.

Thanks I hate it.

EDIT: If this feature persists, it’s going to make our upcoming dynasty draft super annoying. See, for example, here:

[code]

Code tags don’t appear to work either.

The double spacing is applied in the edit window.

So it doesn’t seem like you can avoid the behavior.

Also, do code tags just flat-out not work anymore?

Code tags work fine.

Trying markdown.
Hey I got a preview!
And yeah single spacing works fine.

The monospace font while composing is quite lame, but functional.

Checking code tags:

First line of code
Second line of code
Third line of code

Well, that’s bloody stupid. If I want a new paragraph I’ll tell it I want one.

If you want the old behavior, switch to Markdown mode. Aside from the font, it works exactly as before.

Though I should point out that hitting enter twice never meant two linefeeds. It only ever meant new paragraph. Now, enter means new paragraph and shift-enter means linefeed (in HTML, this is <p></p> tags vs. <br>).

In fact, I strongly resent it.

I am in Markdown mode, and I see the preview panel.

ETA: It’s working! This is on my laptop. Going to try it on my phone next.

Testing markdown mode on my phone. It remembered what I had it set to. That’s good.

ETA: Ok, it’s working the old way.

What is the purpose of the other mode? And why wasn’t there an announcement? Or, more likely, did I miss it?

It looks like that once you’ve chosen markdown, it remembers it. So it’s just another option.

It wouldn’t be announced here because no one here had anything to do with it, or even any awareness of it. That’s the nature of outsourced web services. The users aren’t the customers. The actual customers (the SDMB Powers That Be) may have gotten some notice, but they don’t come here. Don’t forget, this board functions mostly by being completely forgotten by the people paying for it.

Here’s the announcement on Discourse’s own website.

Ok, thanks!

So, you resent the fact that inserting “>” before a line changes it to a block quote, even though you clearly typed the character >, or that typing *Hello* renders Hello, even though you clearly typed those asterisks?

No, because typing those symbols to get those results is intentional.

My turn.

I see that I have to be in markdown mode with its goddamned Notepad font in order to not double space every time I hit the Enter key.

Is there a trick to using spoiler tags?

Apparently there is.

How about spoiler tags
with carriage returns?

OK, that works.

Instead of Courier, the compose box in markdown mode should be either Comic Sans or Papyrus.

That is, an easy-to-read font, with distinguishable glyphs for “Il1” and “O0”. Unlike the muddle we get in the default display font “Il1” and “O0”.

Don’t care. Papyrus is prettier.

Am I going insane? Why isn’t the spoiler tag working for me?

Test.

None of the tags seem to be working for me, and I’m getting all that double spacing, too. And where’s my preview pane? I thought I used to have one of those. Wasn’t there a way to quote a whole post, too? I don’t have that anymore. I can select areas to quote, but I thought there was a way to quite the entirety.

So what’s the trick. Is it something about markdown mode? Oh, wait. The hell? I now have Courier and my preview panel back to the right.

Let’s test:

Did this work?

Looks like it fixed itself.

What’s the deal about pasting the Wordle pic into a thread? It works sometimes, but I can’t figure out the trigger.
