Apparently, in Discourse the footnotes can be either this type [1] or
the other type [2], but not both. This can be selected by the site
admin (I think ECG could do it). Currently ours is set to type [1]
I have no idea why both are not available - they are decidedly different.
Maybe we could poll the SDMB members to ask which would be preferable and
use that setting…
