Testing the romantic comedy clichés

The exception proves the cliché.

I’m looking for two types of posts:

  • Clichés that are often used to create romantic comedies
  • Exceptions to those
Either or both make for a good contribution

Cliches

  1. The female lead is engaged to someone in a prosperous but dull profession (doctor, accountant, professor) but not exciting or different (entrepreneur, chef, fireman, archeologist)
  2. He has a job with lots of discretionary time, writer, self-scheduling exec, while she is either unemployed socialite, 9-to-5 pink collar. Or else they are near-equals in professions like doctor, lawyer, newscaster.
  3. They “meet cute”. They stumble and fall into each other’s laps, splashing pastry around the room. Or he appears as a stranger to rescue her like in Romancing The Stone. But not introduced by friends or set up on a blind date.

I’m sure I’ve seen romantic comedies where they are set up by friends or relatives and it’s a disaster, but then they meet again accidentally and end up realising that they were made for each other after all.

It sort of happens that way with Amy Irving and the pickle seller in Crossing Delancey. Can’t think of others right now. About a Boy?
