Tetris, 30th anniversary

Ah, yes. Tetris, which dropped our department’s productivity to almost zero for a week. Even our VP was playing it. I managed to 'hack" the high scores file so that his admin assistance had an almost improbably high first score and watched him retreat into his office trying to best it. Good times.

As Engineering and Technology Magazine reports, Dr. Tom Stafford from Sheffield University has commemorated this anniversary with a Tetris-themed lecture. He argues that Tetris taps into the basic human mental instinct to tidy things:

I was in the U.S. Navy from 1989 - 93. One time when I was in Japan I remember watching a local play Tetris® in the arcade. That S.o.B. BROKE Tetris®!! Well, not sure if he actually broke it but I seem to recall that he got to the highest level. What a wonder. For his sake I hope he was as good at his schoolwork as he was at Tetris®!!
