Dewey, I’ll get your resume when I get home(the email I have listed here is my home address). I saw their “Firm Overview” page had some different practice areas identified than the “practice areas” section of the site. The one which caught my eye and made me think it may work for you was the “Securities and capital formation” area. Like I said, no idea, especially in this economy, if they’re hiring. Dallas took a pretty hard hit because we had a fairly large tech sector and a lot of money has dried up. They may be running the partners ragged because they can’t afford more associates as opposed to running the partners ragged because they don’t have enough associates. Still, it can’t hurt.
I’m only going to make the one more serious comment, and then I’ll sit back and enjoy the general hilarity. I am an honorary Texan after all, if 2 1/2 years in residence and fleeing the state in the face of a warrant qualifies one as such.
astorian, your position seems to be that, because the Democrats in Texas at some point in the past used their status as the majority party to restrict the power of their rivals through shady and underhanded means, it’s perfectly all right for the Republicans, now that they are in control, to do the same. That’s bullshit. From the most basic “two wrongs don’t make a right” response on up, it’s total bullshit. It’s like the Repubs in the US Senate acting shocked, shocked that a few of the more egregious judicial nominees are being blocked through parliamentary means after those selfsame Repubs did everything they could to impede a Democratic president. And no, I have no intention of getting into a pissing match over who did what to which nominee when. That’s not the point.
Really, it’s true. It is quite amazing the number of perks an A&M education qualifies one to recieve. I have a wallet-sized reproduction of my degree which serves as a pass into many fine establishments. It really is the next best thing to diplomatic immunity when it comes to parking as well.
Otto all kidding aside, it seems to be astorian’s position that the districts are ALREADY Gerrymandered. I agree that more gerrymandering is completely dishonest, but, if his claims are correct, then remedying the situation and having the districts drawn in a way which produces accurate representation of the populations political views seems only fair. The question is, who can be trusted to re-draw the districts? astorian has also claimed the Republicans intend to gerrymander(and the Democrats leaving the state to prevent this from happening seems far more justifiable than chalking this up to a simple hissyfit).
A redistricting was done as little as two years ago(after the 2000 census). Are we certain the districts are not properly drawn? If so, who can be trusted to re-draw them? The Dems seem pretty damn determined not to let the Pubbies do it. Fleeing to Oklahoma is a pretty drastic step as is essentially putting out an APB on them and sending the Rangers after them. Although this is nothing extremely remarkable in the highly amusing annals of Texas political history, this is still a fairly drastic situation in which neither side seems to be willing to give ground.
As a former resident of that flat wasteland of cow plops and toothless fools that is Texas - YOU CAN HAVE IT! 105 degrees AND humid? I moved to the relatively cooler weather of LAS VEGAS!
Now that I’m back in my crazy but beloved Southern California, savoring the glory that is the Orange Bowl and the 5 (yes, 5) Heisman trophies on display at USC (along with various other semi-interesting trophies like the Women’s Volleyball National Championship), I look back on my Texas experience and think, “My God, what posessed me to move there?” Sure, LA is infested with Bruins, but somebody has to clean the toilets, right?
John Alford, a political science professor at Rice University, says that the current district plan is already tilted in favor of Republicans. However, there are Democrats representing five districts with a Republican majority (ranging from 54% to 68% Republican). Had the GOP run better candidates, campaigned better, and/or motivated a higher voter turnout, then the Texas delegation would be Republican-dominated.*
At the moment, I’m more concerned about the other pending bills that are likely in deep trouble at this point because Tom DeLay wants an iron-clad guarantee that the next delegation of representatives is Republican-dominated. Are they anywhere close to finishing the budget work? How about the school finance reform? What about the government reorganization that Rick Perry wants?
*Note: I only mention those three “ifs” because I have no recollection of the 2002 elections and the reasons why Democrats won over their Republican opponents.
Dude, beef brisket is a Kansas City food, don’t go claiming it for Texas. I’ve had what passes for BBQ in Texas, that watery lifeless stuff you sell in Houston. I’ll credit Texas with providing the cows, but as far as preparing the cows, stick to steaks because your BBQ isn’t fit to be a spot on the shoes of a Kansas City or Memphis BBQ cook.
Maybe the legislators just wanted a chance to see a football team that didn’t choke every November.
And having driven through Oklahoma, I can say it’s a great place to hide out. I drove through Muskogee and all these little towns, there are rundown abandoned houses everywhere, perfect for hideouts, and they even have broken windows that will serve for a kickass gunfight when they finally get caught.
Also, it was pretty easy for them to flee to Oklahoma. I mean, my aged grandmother could wade across that pathetic excuse for a river you call your border.
Henrietta, OK to be exact…How I know this, I broke down there on a cross country trip.
It’s the 7th ring of hell…only hotter and with uglier women.
And does that meathead quarterback face have to BE ON EVERYTHING??? Sides of buildings, the parks name, pics of him in the local Wal-mart, a Aikman shrine in the fuckin McDonalds?? Chokin down a hockey pucked Big Mac is bad enough without the being able to see how fucked up his face was by the big blowup of him smiling down at me.
Only one hotel in that place while my car set smugly being repaired, reminding me of every late oil change with each passing glance of that turd in my viewing range. Every freakin room had a picture of him!!!
Yeah, I seem to recall some stadium down there they used to call the “House of Pain”, but I don’t know who was inflicting the pain coz all I remember was a bunch of pansies in baby blue and pink uniforms.
But if you’re a loser with no adult life who lives vicariously through the feats of your local high school, I understand it’s a great place to be.
A little history:
The Dem majority legislature in 2001 neglected to do their constitutional duty and redistrict the state. It was thrown to a redistricting board made up of exec. branch elected officials, who didn’t do a very good job. The district maps we have now (used in the 2002 election) was drawn by a federal court.
If the lege would have done their job 2 years ago (when it was in Dem hands), this mess would have been unnecessary. Of course, Tom DeLay has been twisting arms to guarantee that just about 0 Dems would be elected with the new map (Uh, Tom, you are a fed official, get yer ass back to DC- this is a state matter).
Personally, I’m hoping the Dems will stay in OK, as it will improve both states. I’ve left a message at my representative’s office to that effect.
Whats an Aggie seven course dinner? Six pack of Pearl and road kill.
Damn! It has been so long since I’ve heard a good Aggie joke. Folks round here never heard of Aggies, talk funny, and just about never carry a firearm into a bar. Kinda takes the edge off drinking.
Heard this discussed this afternoon on NPR. I was struck by one thing they mentioned. Seems that one redrawn district connected two areas more than a hundred miles apart by a strip of land less than two blocks wide (Houston and Del Rio, IIRC). Assuming that this is true, and I can’t doubt it, this goes beyond “gerrymandering”. This is a plain old fashioned nekkid power grab. SOP for Texas.
Anything that thrusts a pustule like DeLay into the public spotlight makes my heart soar like an eagle. The man has all the characteristics of a gila monster, except that he lacks the charm.
Pork used for Bar-B-Q is unorthodox, but acceptable. Bar-B-Q sauce that is reminiscent of tomato is anathema. And as much nostalgia as I may retain, I will eat catfish and/or okra again only at gunpoint.
And Dewey, I fear it is too late. New York is the Anti-Christ of Texas, two years and you’re done for. Look what happened to the founder of Kinky Freidman and the Texas Jewboys: reduced to writing lame detective stories in dialect!
